I'm just pointing out that they're making a few big games this year...games you would call traditional. If anything, screw Mario Party...I'm glad Nintendo's working harder on Super Mario Galaxy than they did on Mario Party. |
I think it's less about traditional games and more to do with HAMMER being a new IP that is traditional. Despite loving them for continuing some great franchises, but their only traditional games are sequels, they're essentially saying they don't see room for new traditional IPs. So are we only going to get new Mario and zelda games? And 4 million brain/party/casual games?
Plus HAMMER was also on a very very short list of mature titles published by Nintendo, fans really want to see Nintendo publish a few more mature themed games. It's hard to encourage 3rd parties to bring them when Nintendo won't even develop them.
About your comments of this just being a hammer swinging game, I can say that about well any game. All I do in 75% of games is shoot people. Some games all I do is punch/kick or swing a sword, its pretty much all the same. Most Mario games that are legendary games you simply jump on peoples heads. Jumping and running are essentially the only moves. I'm sure the hammer would have tons of different moves and attachments that would add various gameplay elements. Heck even if it didn't I spent 70% of my time playing Godfather beating people with the bat, and I'd never get tired of it, swinging the wii-mote and smash stuff is quite fun.
I'm sure though this title was most likely canceled because Nintendo was unhappy with it's production, they are a tough company on their second party titles, but they tend to be unfair on the mature action games, they canceled some great looking stuff at Retro Studios like Raven Blade, and even Metroid Prime came close to being canceled on several occasions. Imagine if we didn't get that title, considering how good it came out. Nintendo really lacks vision and any appeal for the American action games, they really need to think that through.
