Forums - Gaming - Is DVD-9 enough this generation?

It is kind of sad Blu-Ray's size is virtually useless in that it has to be filled up with redundant data just to avoid terrible loading times. Is Sony banking on faster readers in the future to avoid this "catch 22"?

 Rockstar wasn't complaining. They just said it was an issue they were working on. You want a complaint, look at Jaffe's response to gamespot's Calling All Cars review.



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Just cause the games so far have fit on these discs doesn't mean the future ones will, MGS is going to fill up the 50 gb BR Disc cause of all the audio tracks in different languages and such supposedly...

Doesn't matter if a game is multi disc though, it's not gonna stop me getting Blue Dragon just cause I have to switch discs, it is more convenient though.

I also heard something to the effect that MGS would be using uncompressed SACD sound (one of the next gen sound technologies competing with DVD-A ROM) which will take up a great deal of space as well.



I believe that 360 is going to have problem with DVD-9 after several years. Like Baldursgate till pc with 5 disc. You had to change the discs all the time. Every time you went back to an area you hade to change back to previous disc. But developers is probably going to choose to have less content in the games to fit it. But still its not that annoying to switch 3 discs but it only works on games like blue dragon that is linear.

Interviwer:You've managed to shoe-horn the game on to one DVD. What are the consequences of that? Has anything had to be held back for downloadble content?

Ray Muzyka: We haven't revealed any plans yet for post-release content; download, episodic. But Mass Effect is a natural fit for that kind of thing.

For the longest time we were pretty sure we were going to have to fit the game content onto two DVDs, because there's just so much content in the game. Right now it looks like we're going to get it on one and it's been difficult because there's a lot of content. It's a very ambitious title.

The voice throughout the game as well; for the main character, all the party members; everybody talks.

Dan Houser, the creative VP at Rockstar Games and senior writer and producer of almost all of the GTA games, recently did an interview with UK’s OPM. All the regular news sites are citing him as saying that the 360’s DVD format and the possible lack of a hard drive as limitations for GTA 4 when compared to the PS3’s Blu-Ray format and guaranteed hard drive.

Actually, if you read the interview (link below), his actual comments are extremely mild and I wouldn’t count them for much. Most developers try to keep things professional and avoid picking sides and making inflammatory statements.

However, the same Dan Houser was extremely clear on the subject of disc storage during an interview in 2004. Remember that that was long before the specs for the PS3 or the 360 were even announced:

One area that I’m really involved in is creating the audio assets – I think we’ll have well over 400 speaking parts, which is insanity. The amount of studio time we’re having to get through and the amount of writing that’s involved, we’re more worried about getting it on the disc. That’s our initial challenge. We’re having to go to dual layer DVD because we’ve already filled up a full DVD.

He sums it up:

The danger is currently the storage medium (DVD), and one we thing we’re all praying for in the next round of hardware is that they don’t just go, ‘It’s DVD again’.

If he made such a comment now, it would seem like an intentionally partisan comment. But from 2004, that quote actually seems like a genuine technical issue.


After this, yeah, it`s not a big deal to change a disc or 3-4 discs. Blu-ray is just for a comfort. :)

Wii won't have size problems. I think we'll have to wait a year or two to see if the DVD is enough for the HD.

Yeah having 25 gigs is pretty useless when 15 of the gigs are just extra copies of important info, stored close to other data so its faster for the laser to find...

I guess whenever games actually NEED 25 gigs, the loading will go from slow to incredibly frustrating.

 I think so too to preserve sound quality or something.
