Forums - Sales - How much money is Sony losing with the PSN?

Everything about the PS3 is a financial nightmare. The PS3 software is incredibly expensive to make also. Did they even profit off of games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, or Ratchet and Clank when you add in the super expensive costs of advertising? The PS3 is the complete opposite of the Wii.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Well sony do sell software on PSN don't they ? which will at the very least cover the costs of PSN .

So the answer i believe is nothing.

LOL. PSN doesn't even have software and an install base comparable to XBL so I doubt they are not losing out on it. Including HOME and I bet they are losing a lot of money. Looks like MS are the smarts ones and cashing in big time and we can see the effects(timed exclusives, DLC GTA4)

Wait, I don't get it. I know you don't know what your talking about here but im going to give it a go anyways. First of all, All PS3's have PSN on them right? So the install base is relatively close to that of 360. Secondly, There is some great software sold on the network that they are covering costs with, ever hear of warhawk (just one example don't flame). Yes microsoft is making money off of Live. The DLC for GTA4 will be lucky to cover its expenses. As for timed exclusives, that remains to be seen if they will pay off.

I agree with the others, you'll probably be banned soon but I'll say you make it to 50 posts.

Crazzyman you indeed are Crazy SONY fanboy=Kaz??. So when did revenue=profit? We all know(well atleast everyone who isn't a sony fanboy) that there is a lot more developing costs required to develop a game for a PS3 game rather than the 360 or Wii counterpart.

I honestly don't even see how this can be discussed in the total absence of reliable data.

Dead Wrong. There is currently around 9 million users. Some haven't connected their PS3 online. So basically that means 360's user base interms of XBL(17million users) is approx double. And WOW ZOMG!!! how did I forget about Warhawk. Really thats the best PS3 has? BTW how much did it sell? How much did Halo 3 sell again?

My posts are always truthful and always correct as we have seen even a mod agree with me that SONY is losing money on PS3. The only ppl who disagree with me are SONY fanboys who fail to release the truth.

I believe this sums it up.

All in all, we don't know how much it is costing them but of course there are labour and server fees. Also we don't have PSN sales numbers in terms of revenue generated. However it can be seen that they are trying to make PSN profitable by adding HOME and generating ad revenue, online movie puychase and rentals etc.

Looks like they'll be in the green soon enough.

PSN doesn't cost them anything. The things you can do with PSN are basically play demos (which is advertising), buy stuff (which obviously makes them money), and play online games. The bandwidth that online gaming uses isn't really that much, and the money they make on the other stuff I'm sure more than covers it.
If you compare overall the amount spent on bandwidth vs. the revenue generated, I'd be willing to bet that PSN has a higher profit margin than typical ad-supported websites.
Microsoft doesn't charge for XBL because they have to, they charge because they can.
Sony has sort of backed themselves into a corner on this one - I know that personally, I bought the PS3 at least in part because online gaming was free - the reason that free online gaming for me is so important is because I don't often do it, but I like to do it enough that I want to have it available. I can't justify the cost of XBL for something I might do a few hours a month, at most. Then again, it depends on how many people buy one game and play it online 24 hours a day, and how many people are like me who almost never play games online, and own pretty much every game on PSN.
