How can this be an ace up their sleeve? Everyone who likes Zelda already has a Wii, and those who still haven't can't be a big group; a new Zelda would be nothing more than supplying the standard fanbase.

what about the 2 million who bought TP on gamecube?

Many of this 2 million probably already have a Wii by now for Galaxy, Smash Bros, Mario Kart and/or Metroid. They are part of the standard Nintendo fanbase anyway. And anyone who is played TP on the GC and didn't like it, won't get excited by a new Wii Zelda. So, it's great for all you guys who like Zelda's, but i can't consider a new Zelda shown at E3 be what I would call an ace up the sleeve of Nintendo. I tell you, a remake of GoldenEye would be more of an ace than a new Zelda, Metroid, Mario can be. I hope you understand what I'm saying. New installations of famous 1st party series, especially when they aren't even the first installation of that series on a platform, (we already have TP on the Wii) are really something else than unexpected announcements, who will atract new or different gamers. Anyway, of course the Zelda fans will be delighted. But that's something else.

Also, I hope I'm not triple posting here, but a new Zelda is a foeboys worst nightmare. It's the only Nintendo franchise that they can't marginalize, and the only games that are universally considered to be great.
A new Zelda wouldn't be a gamechanger, but it would require a lot of people to buy a Wii, who had previously marginalized it. Especially if the trailer is awesome.
While I appreciate your forethought to avoid the barrage if the game is actually announced, it's useless in the end.
This game will be seen and touted as the nail in the PS3's coffin, as far as its chances to win first place are concerned, and this game will be the major talking point for Nintendo fanboys until its released.
Realistically that nail was Wii-Fit.
Anyway, Zelda Wii certainly will be a system seller, if any game on the Wii can be considered as such. Combined sales are at about 6.5 miillion for TP.
I think there is no doubt that a Wii exclusive game would top those sales with what the userbase will be at in 2 years. Particularly if the title is marketed as a bridge title to those casuals who bought the Wii for nostalga purposes as well as casual gaming.
So, again, I appreciate your forethought, but you should just resign yourself. If Zelda Wii is announced at E3, then the lid is gonna blow off the forum, and it's gonna be the biggest announcement at the show. While Kingdom Hearts III for the Wii would be amazingly huge, as well as games like Icarus and Punchout, Zelda can and will without a doubt overshadow the whole show, and wont stop being discussed until it's released in 2010. You can bet your last dime on that.
While I can see how people who didnt' grow up with Nintendo might not see why its such a phenom, the industry goes crazy over every Zelda game, and despite the theory that it's possible for you not to know why, I'd calculate that more people know why a new Zelda is a big announcment, than people who can identify Mario.
The biggest possible announcment from Nintendo software at E3, commercially, is Zelda Wii, bigger than Earthbound, bigger than Punchout, bigger than Icarus, bigger than Mario. If it's announced, you won't have to take my word for it.
