Forums - General - force chkdsk to run?

ok, my computer crashed (as it does a lot. I have Vista) but this time when I booted it up apparently a lot of system files are totally screwed. I can still access my files and such and FF and internet work ok, but not much else. I've tried like a million ways to get chkdsk to run. I scheduled it to run on restart like 6 times. 2 in the standard way and 4 through the cmd prompt, but the computer still start without running it. Any ideas how to make it run? If I have to, I can transfer all my files and such to another computer and do a full systm restore, but for obvious reasons, I'd rather not do that.

help. anyone?

chkdsk = Chick Disk right?

You shouldn't watch porn it't bad for you.

sorry. chkdsk = "check disk utility". It's an automatic Windows utility that can check HDDs and fix corrupted files and stuff. It can only be run on discs that are not currently being used, so it has to be run on startup. But I can;t get it to run.

If nothing runs you may have to boot in a different OS:

http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

This is a linux image that can be burned to CD and is bootable. It can access and NTFS data and should have all necessary tools.

(It should also be possible to make a bootable Windows image but not that easy.)

Try hitting F8 on startup (just after POST) or using your Windows Vista install disc to boot into the recovery console. Log in to your Windows installation and type:
chkdsk /f /b /x <ENTER>

Around the Network

ok thats easier

Didn't even think about the recovery console... Took me a while to figure out how to get to it on Vista, but my compt is now running great. Thanks guys!
