Forums - Nintendo - What should the next Donkey Kong game be like?

It should be like DK 64. Every 3-D DK game so far should have been like DK 64, but Nintendo wouldn't like to do that. Oh, no no no no.

Instead, they decide to make a racing game that's not nearly as good and sells much less. Makes perfect sense, right?

Rare owns DKC rights I think. Otherwise, I'm sure there would have been a lot more games. Hence why they replaced a few characters from Diddy Kong Racing DS. If rumors are true about them switching over to Sony, it'll only be a few years before Rare are back with Nintendo (and then the cycle continues).

Really? Why would rare own rights to a nintendo game? Anyway it doesn't have to be DKC just something as good.

Rare used to be Nintendo exclusive. Back in the day where Goldeneye, Perfect Dark (the original), Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie and Conqers Bad Fur Day were out. From what I understand, Nintendo got pissed off about the Conkers game and pretty much shoved Rare out the door because Nintendo wanted to be "family friendly" and Rare wanted to well...show perfect squirrels fucking shit up. All games went to Rare except Donkey Kong who was owned by Nintendo, so Rare pretty much just let them keep Diddy Kong and the assorted other characters from those games (except Banjo and Conker of course).

I know, but you said you think rare owns DKCs rights, when it is a nintendo franchise. The other games were rare franchises thouhg(banjo, Pefect Dark, Conker).

I would actually like to see a well deeper take on the series. More story driven and kinda like an adventure title. Something kind of like a mix between Metroid Prime and Zelda. I think that would be fun.

Please let it be like Donkey Kong Country 2 for the snes best DK game imo . I want to ride my swordfish and rhino again!

The series needs to try to find its platforming roots again before we start talking about a more story driven DK. People need a game to remind them what Donkey Kong and the kongs were about, something to rid their mind of the image of the character who's a bongo lovin' gorilla who occasionally plays sports.

So really, as many have stated before, a game very similar to the Country series/64 that retains traits the country series/64 stood for like-

-Great Music
-Great uses of different Kong's strengths and weaknessess blended with level design
-Great graphics that meet or are above graphical standards of whichever system the game is developed for.

Now whether it's in 2D or 3D or who it's developed by I don't care anymore as long as it shows what Donkey Kong at its peak, was all about (which is highly unlikely).

I actually never played my donkey kong countries on the snes, but on the GBA. Very good games.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is still my favorite. It may not be as "good" as the Donkey Kong Country games, but it beats them in terms of fun (at least for me). At the end of the day, pure fun wins over quality.

I'd really want a Donkey Kong Jungle Beat 2, with bongo support (and added Wiimote support for the ones without bongos).

Anyway, whatever comes next for DK, I'm hoping it remains 2D gameplay.

First of all, I want to say that Nintendo owns the rights to all DK characters and can release new games with the Kongs without even having to contact Rare. I just wanted to make that clear.

Now let's talk about games. I want to DK games. First, I want a 2D platformer on the DS, called either NEW DKC or just DKC 4. Just follow the rules of the SNES games and it would be perfectly fine and make people happy. Also, DK would be back in the heads of gamers.

After that, they could release a DK platformer for the Wii. I'd want it 3D, although something like Wario Land: The Shake Dimension would also be interesting. If it is 3D, they should screw all the Adventure elements DK 64 introduced. The problem with that game was that it was a copy of Banjo-Kazooie, which was a copy of Mario 64. Instead of inventing new things, Rare just made the games bigger and bigger. Now we should go back to the roots, Gameplay-wise it could be in the vein of Rayman 2 for example which was a fine platformer in 3D. (Don't judge it on the DS version though, it seems to me that it aged not that well).

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

to be honest (and although I couldn't play the Bongos myself) I was amazed to look at how my friend did nearly 20 Combos at JUNGLE BEAT.

Overall,  Jungle Beat was a very good game with fantastic colours, settings and sounds... but I WISH it had a normal control-system based on the Wivebird. So I would be very happy with a similar style 2D Adventure but WITHOUT the bongos (of course developed by Nintendo, inhouse).
