Forums - Microsoft - Mistwalker Update: MW and Sakaguchi working on game that pre-dates FFVII

I think FFXII's gameplay received very mixed reviews from fans. I'd like to think most liked it more than the outdated random encounters + turn-based system of the past, but it's probably more of 50-50 split. In review circles, the gameplay was universally acclaimed. What seems to be hated most about that game was the story and characters.

IMO, turn-based combat is fine. Even random encounters are decent. The problem arises when it takes ridiculous amounts of loading time to go from the overworld to the actual battle. That's one of the reasons Chrono Trigger is universally loved; turn based combat + no load times + no random encounters.

Thats my point. Not only was the story knocked as being too shallow (without Sakaguchi, mind you), but the gameplay was attacked by many FF fans because the battle system "played by itself", and ticked off many people (I loved it, mind you).

So it seems that if Sakaguchi does a turn based game, he's viewed as being an archaic developer, yet others on this forum attack ARPGs, regardless. I'm of the persuasion that as long as Sakaguchi is fulfilling his vision with the game, and he has talented developers that work hard, it's going to be a great product that I'm going to enjoy.

I may have liked FFXII's battle system more if it wasn't for gambits. Anyway I like random encounters and turn based battles actually. More than anything else.

I would take issue with calling a real time RPG an advancement.

It's just a different style. Real time and Action RPGs aren't any better or more advanced then Turnbased games.

I really liked FF12's gameplay. I also like the traditional turnbased gameplay.

What I hated was FF12s story.

It's like Matsuno got halfway through making an Ogre Battle game named Final Fantasy, then when he left they just shoveled in all the Starwars refrences they could.

Sakaguchi is an old dog that should learn some new tricks. He cant keep doing exactly the same as 10-12 years ago as long as game desing go.If he does his works can be "good " or even "very good" as Lost Oddysey but never brilliant.Game design keeps evolving and Sakaguchi is frozen in the past.

Sorry totally disagree. FF7 was the last game that Sakaguchi had full control of in FF series. Needless to say it was well above 8-12 in terms of story and gameplay. Lost Odyssey was a brilliant game certainly more emotinal than FF7 and very very similar in gameplay with a few added tweaks(ring system). Blue Dragon was good not great, but the second post of his brings absolute warmth to me. I want the traditional JRPG's not the suedo realtime thingys(they can be good if done right IE not FF12). I couldnt care less if th review media mark traditional JRPG's down for not doing anything new, because that is the very reason I love the genre.

lol. FF VIII and FF IX trash over FF VII in terms of gameplay...and story. Don't let rabid FF7 fans delude you about this thing. There were much better FFs on the PS1 than FF VII.

And like Acevil said, the last game he had control of was FF IX (the best FF).

When FFVIII came out, everyone I knew, hated it. The junction system was confusing, and the whole "lets asorb magic spells from enemies" was/is the worst idea that ANY FF ever addopted. The story, and card game were awesome, though.
