I'm probably one of the few people on this board that aren't stoked by this. At all.
Yes, I still have both Diablos, and the LoD expansion pack to D2. I played Diablo 2 for roughly a year - getting one character to hell and beating the game once with some others (plus the countless ones I screwed up for subpar skill point placement).
Diablo 2 is great at what it does: Its skill customization options, random maps, sufficient storyline, and streamlined gameplay are still causing widespread wrist trauma worldwide. Diablo 2 is great for anyone who likes online games, doesn't hate RPG aspects in gaming and wants something a cut above your generic console maim-a-thon.
But to me, that's all. And eventually, it's no longer enough.
I was running with one of my Barbs through the third part of the second difficulty level (can't remember the name anymore) - I think it was the jungle section - wasting a bunch of midgets when I stopped and asked myself: "Why am I still playing this?" And I had no answer, except to get better loot. That's what the game had been reduced to - grinding. There's no storyline development after you kill Baal, no new quests or levels are opened (except the Cow level), no new skills or character classes become available. Once you beat the game, there's only grinding for more levels and better gear. I can tolerate grinding if there's a sufficient reward in the end, but grinding for the sake of grinding is just boring. And when the game has nothing else to offer, why bother playing?
After that, I closed the game, deleted it, and despite several tries with different characters and skill configurations have never been able to bother finishing the first difficulty level since.
Nevertheless, I'll probably still buy this eventually from a bargain bin or borrow it from someone. If D3 has something else to offer me besides grinding after the first run-through, great. If not, then the Diablo series will most likely be dead to me.
