I'm estimating Diablo 2's sales at around 7-8 millions.
We know that the Diablo franchise sold over 17 millions copies (Diablo + Diablo: Hellfire + Diablo II + Diablo II: Lord of Destruction) from Vivendi's Report.
The first Diablo sold 2.5 millions copies. So there's 15.5 millions left for the rest.
Diablo: Hellfire couldn't have sold more than 2.5 millions too. A more reasonable figure would be 1.5 millions (the expansion wasn't even made by Blizzard). So there's 14 millions left for Diablo II and it's expansion.
Diablo II sold 1 million in the first 2 weeks. Then sold 2.8 millions in the first 6 months. Then sold 4 millions in the first 12 months, just before the expansion was released which no doubt would give a boost to DII's sales.
Since there's 14 millions to divide between Diablo II and Lord of Destruction, it would be probable for Diablo II to have 8 millions copies sold and the expansion have 6 millions.
For Comparison, Starcraft sold 'only' 1.5 millions in it's first year. Yet when it was all said and done, the number was pegged at 9.5 millions copies (including Brood War). That's the PC Game legs right there, just like what happened to Diablo II.

However, Diablo 2 is still one of my favorite games, but it was actually better to wait through all 10 D2 patches before you even started playing. D3 will be great, but I wouldn't get excited for about 6 years, at which time the game will be perfect and playable on most PC at high settings. Now, it is just an outline sketch for the masterpiece. |
Fail, D2 was fantastic before all the patching. Not sure the patch number, but it took like 2 years to come out. WHen it did they completely nurfed the cow level and made it so Baal runs was the only thing to do. My buddies had a blast running the cow level over and over. ANd they also upped Baal's life way to much, he was annoying and everyone started going sorceress for static shock and java zon to beat him quickly.

I had a summonancer who used Corpse Explosion myself. Name was Necrophilia. Ladder season 2 #6 on the ladder, lvl 98. I sure miss him, now he is stuck on the horrible non ladder. :( Bonemancers were great as well until they fixed the Marrowalk boot glitch. |
Hell yea, i also had a summonancer way back in the day. 96 necro with corpse explode used all the time in the Secret Cow Level. His name was IPhuckDeadPeople. Those were the days!

Don't count on it bud. It seems the witch doctor is taking their spots.
He's like a combo between the two :S
I am glad it isn't an MMO. Maybe that means I will actually play it. Diablo 2 is the game that made me stop playing PC games, so Diablo 3 has some big shoes to fill. Diablo 1 is one of the best games ever made, period.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
Blizzard games sell well because whilst they're very popular in both Europe and America they also have huge popularity in Asia (especially South Korea). Expect both starcraft 2 and Diablo 3's sales to be huge.
It'll sell like shit. Don't they know PC gaming is dying?
But in all seriousness, awesome news! :D
Well finnally. A pc game worth buying. There hasnt been too many around,
in my opinion.
Props to Blizzard for keeping PC gaming alive.
