His recent stuff always seems to turn out good in my opinion (especially Big Fish) And He has a noticeable style in his movies that is memorable.  He is very consistent with the movies he directs.

Who is your favorite film director?

Quentin Tarantino hes awesome!

Either Jean-Pierre Jeunet or Darren Aronofsky....

But then there's David Fincher...and Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan....argh.....who can pick a favorite.

I've seen all those Burton films except for Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd. I prefer his earlier work, everything up through Mars Attacks! basically.

If you think Tim Burton has an original visual style, watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and you'll see where he stole his entire visual style. It's just good old German Expressionism.

Here are some screenshots:

Sorry. I'm a film major and it's ruined my life.

I'm not saying he's not a good director. I'm just saying that the reason most people love him is for his unique visual style, and it's not unique. I think Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands are some of the best films ever made. And he made Ed Wood, a movie about one of my favorite directors of all time, so he scored major points with me right there.

Hell yeah etecoon, Jeunet kicks ass.

I can't really pick a favorite, but for now I'll pick "Beat" Takeshi Kitano.

^Nice taste in directors, you covered all of mine. Oh and my mate Hammo, he's going to be big one day;)

Why does every like edward scissorhands? I thought it was probably his worst movie I saw. Well, I know other directors have probably made films in the same style as his, but he still makes them. There is two burtons you could say, the early burton (dark and unusual) and the burton now (the one that makes the visuals department his bitch) Technology is how hes changed in directing.

Seriously, big fish is his greatest movie, last month I caught the ending on TV and I was freaking crying.

BTW that movie looks f-ing weird rubang.

some people will really disagree with me
but i like paul ws andersons work

Because of the sheer amount of actors and extras, the scenic beauty and intricacy of his sets, I'll go with Zhang Yimou. (Heros, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the golden flower.)

suprised no one mentioned steven spielberg.(wrong spelling probably)
