360 vs Wii for million sellers, id give the 360 the edge, more good third party games than the Wii

A better question might be which console will sell more software total, or what the added up total sales of the million sellers will actually end up being.

At this point even with a near doubling of the 360s userbase in the near team the Xbox 360 will continue to stretch its lead over the Wii in terms of million sellers. It will be close, but its also quite a gap to close especially as the Wii tends to have much of its software sales concentrated on: Wii-Play, Wii-Fit, Wii-Sports, Mario-Kart and several others which have already passed the million mark. In effect the legs of the platform work against it for racking up multiple million sellers, but for it in terms of multiple 3+ million sellers.

Wii.

It's the dominant platform. Being so it will have the better games and the most million sellers.

I think the one thing that will keep the Wii from surpassing the 360 in this race is that its userbase seems less inclined to spread the wealth, as it were. Almost everyone who owns a Wii owns certain games—Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Wii Play, Wii Fit, etc—and other titles seem to be victims of their success, somewhat.

You'll notice that the numbers of actual copies sold for the top ten selling games for 360 and Wii, the Wii has sold vastly more. To be a top-selling game on the Wii, you need to sell over 5 million, not just over 1. On the 360, the top-selling games sell quite a bit less overall, but there is a much larger spread of titles selling a million. It's possible that the userbase for 360 is actually more diverse than the Wii's, at least in terms of the types of software that they're willing to drop money for.

I hand-counted the numbers of million sellers from that Wikipedia article.  I think I made mistakes on the PS1 and PS2, and these should only be considered rough estimates:

As we can see, the number of million sellers on a console increases drastically when the console has 100 million sold.  The Wii will easily pass that number; the 360 will not even come close.

I did say "near term", I didn't say forever. Besides this it looks like the Xbox 360 will blow past the PS1 figure this year with fewer than half the install base. That figure of 147 million sellers from the PS2 isn't safe from the Xbox 360 either. The very condition that "HD games need to sell a million or more to make money" is the same reason why it continues to ratchet up the million sellers so quickly.

A console with cheap to develop software will have a lot of releases, so I would expect that the Wii will have a much higher % of software below the million mark and a much higher % of million sellers to be multi-million sellers.

Hmm i really think it will be between Wii and the 360, 360 has more milion sellers atm, and its owners do buy a lot of software.

But Wii can be around for longer, it has bigger userbase (that increases all the time), there is an increase of 3rd party support (something that was not the case in last 2 years), and games do appeal to wider audience. Plus the 360 was launched in 2005.

I think in long term Wii will have more million sellers, because of the legs.
