A lot of the Tagalog language is like Spanish. I believe this has to do with the fact that Spain occupied the Philippines for some time. Interestingly enough, while the words may look the same...most of the time you wouldn't recognize them as Spanish if you heard them spoken.
yes, quite true. many filipino/tagalog words are actually spanish words that were localized. and super_etecoon is correct, this is due to the over 300 years of spanish occupation of the country.
could you also include the stressed syllable? One of the biggest issues I've had with picking up tagalog is learning which syllables to stress. I always end up stressing the wrong one.
