Why is everyone so into lightsabers? Isn't just a regular sword except like glowing and stuff?

And part of the allure with the Wii is the dream that there will one day be a 1:1 motion controlled light saber game.

So what's the deal? What's the attraction? Why not just like.... a regular 1:1 motion controlled sword game? Wouldn't it be the same? Does it have to be star wars?
