I think you got the quote wrong; those are the two things which are certain in life.

The meaning is 42.

The purpose of life is...whatever you decide, or discover, your purpose is.

Actually from a purely atheistic point of view. The purpose is life is to continue.

So in other words, have sex.

Well the answer to the ultimate question of life is 42, but that only matters if you really understand the question in the first place;)

To coin an old phrase "I wouldn't want to join a nudist club that let people like me join."

From an another athiest perspective, people create the notion of a purpose to overcome doubts and the psychological insecurity of meaninglessness. We depend on a purpose to validate our very existence and our ongoing continuity. In this day and age a purpose is what you choose to make of it.

Edit: Indeed, one of the strengths of religion is in its ability to provide a sense of purpose, especially for those that have none.
