Forums - Sales - DS is no competition for PSP, says Sony

I see Sony taking the PSP to cellphone gaming with the PSP2, it will most likely focus on competing with the iphone / cellphone market breathing new life into cell phone gaming.

I sure hope not. No way I'd buy it if they do that.

I don't really see it. How would they make the form factor small enough for a phone? The current PSP is like twice as big as an acceptable phone. If you make the screen smaller, much of the graphics advantage gets wiped out. If you make the controls smaller, it will cause people fits. It would also require abandoning the UMD drive.

...DS is for everyone else, which is why the PSP is somewhat marginalized in software. #3 ups hardware but not software. people in group #5 buy only a few games. Many in group #4 pirate. I think at this point it is mostly Sony fans and people wise enough to see the value of playing all those old games for cheap and having them be portable (thats me) who are driving the PSP.

I've deleted this post because it stunk of fanboyism. I just couldn't leave it lying around. I'll just say I agree with you for the most part, but I still think the DS is the best gaming console in general.

You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

They need a new idea instead of not in competition...!

Did Sony make any money off that music and video? I'm guessing most people pirate or copy from their existing collection.

I'd imagine the profit margins are quite poor on hardware, compared to the DS and iPod. As far as making money as a hardware platform, I just don't see it being a big profit generator. And if they don't make much money off of games, video or music, where do they expect to really profit if hardware profits are small relative to the industry?

Sony might have also made a ton of money off stuff like Go! Explore and the GPS stuff. Sony might be making aprofit off the PSp actually, it's hardware is similar to what was in the PS1... isnt it...?

This just in: Sony hires Xerxes to do their PR spins, as well as control the tides in his spare time. Film at 11.

I do wonder sometimes if Sony's PR agents realize that trying to talk their systems up by saying they're not competing with their competitors just makes them look worse... Sure, the ultimate goal of any company is to be in a cushy position where you don't have to compete for whatever reason, but Sony's definitely not in that position for any of its systems.

I think it's closer to the PS2, but I might be incorrect.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Yeah, and neither is the Wii...roflol!

Selective competition to ensure you ge the best possible spin...AMD isn't competing with Intel, ATI isn't competing with Nvidia, the LAkers evidently didn't compete with Celtics in game 6 (ouch!)...lol!

Yes, but the DS has no good games except for the ones that are made by Square-Enix.  And, the Wii may be the leading console saleswise  right now.   However, when you try to compare Wii games to  the games on previous  generation winners, they just blow compared to  SNES, PS1, and PS2 games.
