I believe MGS4 also moved a lot of hardware in America.
I know this has to be stinging a lot of people who want the 360 to somehow "defeat" the PS3, but we're well past the point where that is possible. In fact, we're well past the point where any of the current consoles can "defeat" any of the others, all they can do now is to try and grab or maintain a bigger slice of a pie where no-one has greater than half. They each have enough installed base, large enough software libraries, and sufficient new-game development pipeline to be successful now and in the foreseeable future. There just isn't going to be another PS2 vs everybody-else sort of crushing going on this generation.
Sony execs have probably been breathing sighs of relief over the past few months just to know that the PS3 isn't going to get crushed, much less worrying about PS3 "domination". My guess is they're focused on maintaining and increasing the momentum they've built.
The question this generation isn't who will dominate... that's no longer possible. Anyone who still clings to that believe is living in fantasy land. The questions now are:
1. Who will actually make an overall profit? Nintendo is clearly the winner here, with both Sony and MS having a long road ahead to offset the losses they've suffered this generation. Of course, Nintendo absolutely *must* make money overall, specifically because they're a one-trick pony, i.e. - they don't have other business lines to fall back on.
2. Who is building a better base for the next generation? This is a much harder question to answer, but as strange as it may sound, Nintendo may have the leg up here, as well. They've established a business model where they can build cheaper systems yet still thrive. My guess is they'll make money right out of the starting gate next generation, just as they have this generation.
This time last year I really wondered if the PS3 would survive. Fortunately for Sony, they've come back with a vengence and are catching up with the pack.
