I personally feel that the people creating the game should have gotten explicit permission to use that building if they wanted to. A church is not a public building, it is someones property (I guess of the congregation?). How would you like it if someone made a replica of your house and used it as a scene for a grisly murder game if you were against violence?

In this case, I don't think copywrite has anything to do with it. The church is saying they did not give permission to use their church in the game. Just because their doors are open and everyone is welcome to come inside doesn't mean you can move in and do whatever you like inside.

errrrr, videogames are teh reelz?

errrrr, did I say they were? How about someone recreates your house and makes a game about abusing little kids inside it?

Your hatred for Sony runs deeper than your logic and analogies. i missed the part in resistance where REALISTIC DILEMMAS OCCURED INVOLVING CHILD ABUSE........comparing child abuse to fighting aliens, you deserve to be slapped in the face you know that.....and please, the church being angered over "violence atached to their name or cathedral" go read a book for gods sake (pun intended)

You know what is crap having to defend an honest statement for being anti-sony because it happens to portray them in a negative light. Apparently now saying that a someone might have a case against Sony because they had their building shown in a way they didn't approve of without their permission is a ludicrous idea. JSF I respect your opinion as well but would say a more apt comparison if your going to use the Louvre would be something like using the Louvre as the headquarters in a game for smuggling drugs in and out of the country through use of their art. Its something that they most likely would be opposed to and if they had not even been contacted about the game before it was published. Also if I remember right the Hunchback of Notre Dame had a positive affect on the Church of Notre Dame spuring public interest that helped in the restoration of the church not to mention they never opposed to the book in the first place to my knowledge.

Now stepping outside of the context of whether or not they could have a case I fully believe that its stupid as all hell for them to seriously believe that someone is going to say ohh look Manchester Church is good for gun fighting just like in this game I'm going to get my Bulleye out right now and get down there and start shooting but it doesn't change the fact that they might have a case far stupider cases have been in the past. Just off the top of my head a guy sues McDonalds for making him fat, smokers sue tobacco companies for being bad for them I think is how that one goes despite the fact that they had to smoke the first ciguarette for it to become addicting and yes putting contents hot on a cup of coffee and I think one of my favorite old ones was Beavis and Butt-head having to add a disclaimer because people don't know that fire burns things. But somehow all of these went through I didn't think whether or not it was good for video games in general was the topic we were covering if it was I'm completly on your side all this will do is drive up the cost of development as developers have to make sure they check with places they photo-realistically portray to make sure they are portrayed in a light that is agreeable with owners.

It's confirmed, what this church is after is money (surprising? not really).

Apparently they're asking for a cut of the profits:

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

And they call themselves followers in the name of god... thou shall not be greedy... or something like that... right...

This profile is no longer in use, see my other profile *~Onna76~*

Isn't the building in the game mostly destroyed and un-recognisable? How many people are going to think OMFG this is a real church. The church is evil!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe in god anymore because some American in a PS3 game has defilled it with his killing of fictional characters in a video game! To the church, grow up. So much for sharing and peace and love to everyone.

It's not exactly what that article maks it out to be. Here is a much better version of events.

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6739575.stm

Gaming websites aren't really the best for accurate current events reporting. These requests make it sound more like the requests of a charitable organisation than just wanting a big cut of the profits.

Very sad development, for example in one of the best Amiga Dune II clones (Napalm) there's the Statue of Liberty shown half under water and in ruins, The game Nuclear war used recognizable caricatures of real people like Gorbachev, Reagan, Thatcher and Khomeini, the main villan in Desert Strike looks like Saddam Hussein, etc. IMO potentially much more severe cases than this.

And they make it sound like hundreds of people are being killed in the virtual Cathedral, while in fact the monsters being "killed" hardly represent anything human-like. The ugly 4 legged critters rather looked like this:

Somewhat ironic considering Christianity with its violent history of murdering millions of innocent people for holding other believes or the killing of alledged witches in the name of faith. Violence however sadly is part of human nature, I rather see teenagers beat each other up in a video game than on the streets, I rather have a teenager get his or her's kicks from killing an ugly deamon-like virtual critter than killing a real person or hurting real animals. The GTA series or Carmageddon series have pushed the boundaries far further, as they are being played in much more realistic settings.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I doubt this'll really go anywhere, but imagine if the church won. Think of all the new cases that would suddenly pop up. I know one lawyer who would have a field day with it.

So you're saying that because of the History of Slavery in the United States, Nazism in Germany and the treatment of Natives in Canada leaders in these countries can never make a statement against race based predjudice?

Once again people who believe that they're enlightened demonstrate bigotry ...

Well this case seems ridiculous. How long has Resistance been out now? Its been almost 8 months in the US and going 3 in Europe. Anyone from the UK? Can you give us and idea of how your copyright law is handled?
