Forums - Sony - Sony's Franchises

Sonys franchises own Nintendos, its a little thing called diversity.

Hmm maybe more diverse, but they hardly have the same appeal as Nintendo ones. I mean, can Sony franchises move 20 million systems, like Nintendo franchises did for the GC?.I seriously don´t think so,

I don't personally enjoy Sony's titles as much as I do Nintendo's either, but clearly some people disagree, and Sony's software sales figures HAVE risen sharply in the last 6 years; even over the PS1 sales, which were lower than PS2, but comparable. It's now one of the top 5 software producers.

Again, most Sony games aren't my cup of tea (although I love Team ICO projects and really like the look of "Afrika"), but I think it's silly to suggest that one of the top 5 software manufacturers in the world isn't a legitimate contender for best overall. If Nintendo were number 1 and Sony number 23, I'd agree, but last I checked, Nintendo is number 2 and Sony number 4. Does that mean Nintendo sells more games? Sure, but it's not a "OMG Nintendo crushes Sony" type of situation, either.

It is difficult to demonstrate with the changes that have taken place on this site over the past little while but Sony is far smaller in terms of sales than Nintendo is:

Historically speaking Nintendo has been second in North America and Europe with taking (roughly) 20% of the sales in a year; the 3rd, 4th and 5th place publishers varies every year but (typically) takes 5%-6% of the market.

The difference in sales between Nintendo's 2nd place (probably 1st place this year) and Sony's 4th place (probably lower than 10th place this year) is huge.

Didn't realise Shadow of the Colossus was sony developed.

Quite a few wicked games on that sony list I'd thought were third party.

A lot of rubbish too, but still. If sony can start pumping out some of that quality onto PS3 they have a chance of beating 360.

Where are all the sony PS3 titles? Did they really think it would seel just on the brand name?

For me, I regret trading in Omega Boost, I own but never beat Legend of Dragoon, and White Knight Story looks interesting. That's it for me.  Ah, I didn't notice, I have the first PS2 Arc the Lad game too.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

There's no arguing Sony's in house has some impressive titles, God of War, Killzone, Shadow of the Collosus, Ratchet and Clank, Grand Tsurisimo, etc.

But sadly it takes more than inhouse games to make a system a winner, the N64 and GC proved that. I think these are good games, but I wouldn't buy a console for them and it would seem the consumer market, to the greater extent, agrees with me. With so many third party developers jumping ship, Sony's best bet for a strong system line up is its first party games and if they keep the course there's no reason the PS3 can't trump the 360 game wise, sales may be another matter though altogether. Only time will tell...

Hmm. That's about as true as saying Sony games shifted 100m+ consoles, yeah, I know GC was mainly 1st party and PS2 had a lot of 3rd party games, but I'm sure the Sony games shifted a fair few PS2s aswell. 13m think GT3 sold, so that's a fair amoun of appeal :P

Lol, GTA isn't a Sony brand name though. Still its like you said, almost impossible to measure which company's first party titles moved more consoles and even if we did know those numbers, how would we adequately weigh them against the other factors that contributed to each console's success? In threads like this I think its best we all stick closely to just opinions rather than trying to feign facts or objective analysis where there really is none on the matter.

GTA3=Gran Theft Auto 3
GT3=Gran Turismo 3

Anyway my point is it's impossible to tell how much appeal a game has by using any means really.
