Excuse me but since when WKC had a strong brand name? Is it a sequel to a good selling game that i'm not aware of?


 The game is made by Level 5.  I am guessing you don't know that the Japanese go crazy for pretty much anything Level 5.  They are one of the preimer RPG developers there.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Don't you mean most JRPGs are niche. DQ, FF, and KH can't be the only non-niche RPG series, that just makes no sense. What about Tales and Star Ocean? They sell pretty well for JRPGs not having the name of DQ, FF, and KH.

 


Well, aren't we talking about JRPGs now? Also, Star Ocean isn't niche but it's definitely not one of SE's pillar franchises. SO turned into a "lesser" franchise than DQ, FF, and KH after the merge. Not saying SO isn't popular/important, but it's not one of their pillar franchises. Also, Tales of is still niche. ToS is the best-selling Tales of and that sold only 1 mil. Most other Tales of sell less. 1 mil isn't bad at all but it's not huge. Not to mention most people don't know about the franchise.

According to a press release from Namco after the Tales series sold 10 million copies,  Tales of Destiny also sold over a million copies.
