Forums - Gaming - Are you a "niche" gamer?

I think I am. I tend to have games that aren't block-buster titles as my top favourites. Usually, the games I enjoy the most are just "okay" sellers.

For example, I am a few hours into the game, "Etrian Odyssey", and I would easily rank it a 9+/10. (Gamerankings got its average at 73%). I think this game appeal to hardcore gamers. Err... more like... really hard game :) It's like playing old school RPG and having to... draw your own map during your adventures. The cartography part I found really interesting so far.

I normally am not attached to specific gene of games. I enjoy games as simple as "Quick Spot", too.

However, these "niche" games do appear once a while and when they do, they are really that awesome. Such as UFO: After____ series has been one of my favourites PC games for many years and still is.

So, are you a "niche" gamer? What are some of your top favourites that are on "must play list" that never really got the spotlight they deserve?

I'll start with mine (avoiding games that are too old),

Etrian Odyssey (DS) - few hrs into the game and pretty sure it will be among the top of favs list. old school rpg.

UFO: Afterlight (PC) - X-com kinda game with SAS system. This game will surely kill many hundred hrs of your time. Steep learning curve.

Pac Pix (DS) - Drawing pacman with stylus is fun. Hope it gets a sequel and expand the game modes and maybe bring it online. Yes, you have to draw your pacman to bring it to lie to eat the ghosts.

Puzzle Quest (DS/PSP) = Bejewell + RPG. If you had bejewell on your fav list, say bye bye to it as this one will replace it. Unexpected success kinda game. I am sure this game will quickly become top seller as words get around. There's a PC demo is you really want to try it.

Master of Orion 3 (PC) - Steep learning curve for new players. The original "Master of Orion" used to take up hundred of hours of my free time.  Due to lack of sales, I think there won't be a 4 anytime soon :(

One of my favorite games is Harvest Moon 64. Not exactly obscure, but probably not on too many people's lists either. There's just something about virtual crops and a virtual family that make them so much more compelling than their real life counterparts.

I love shmups, so yes

"Why do they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away"

I'm still a harvest moon freak. But I'm an every-game gamer. I'm the opposite extreme of niche. I will play anything and everything and chances are enjoy it. It makes it really tough to have enough money lol

Some of the games you mention do get the spotlight on game review sites like Puzzle Quest.

I really need to try Etrian Odyssey and Puzzle Quest, I can't wait to play those two games.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

everybody is a "niche" gamer in some ways...

i'm also playing etrian odyssey... on the 12 floor... so while i'd charaterize the game experience as truly an "odyssey" i just can't give up keep playing it... huge waste of time, no justification whatsoever, sigh.  i rated it 8 or 9 here on vgc.

it seems pretty classic RPG to me, don't understand why reviewers say it's niche.  it's just missing a storyline.

but my "niche" is all the "non-game" games.  wario, wii sports, DDR, brain age, etc.  maybe i'll start up a company that makes these games... and then i can make like chemistry training, physics training, math training, etc.

the Wii is an epidemic.

I bought this game few weeks ago. Puzzle Quest looks great and fresh when you start to play (BTW there is a demo version on game site (PC)). In long run it gets a bit boring (especially when you have to travel from one side of the map to another and fight all this creatures on your way...). I haven't finished it yet.

harvest moon rocks. That's actually one of the biggest reasons I havent sold my Wii.

PS: The PSP harvest moon is fun.

Have you played Lumines? If you haven't get that it's the best PSP puzzle game so far I think.

Yes, I like Lumines a lot. I bought it after I found Lumines 2 demo really cool. I think Puzzle Quest is nowhere close to the long-lasting appeal of Mizuguchi's child. Actually this is also only game which attracts my girlfriend (besides PC's Tetris4000).
