Sony President Still Not Ruling Out PS3 Price-Cut

Here we go again. Speaking to the daily Yomiuri Shimbun, Sony President Ryoji Chubachi has said they will "not rule out the possibility of lowering the price" of the PS3.

Sound familiar? That's because we've been here before. Less than two months ago. Same guy, nearly the exact same quote. Guess that means they're thinking longer, and harder about it.

If you're reading this, and you're in any way involved in PS3 PR, my heart goes out to you. Really. Your job, especially the bit about denying rumours about Sony considering a PS3 price-cut, just got a lot harder. Impossible, even. The guy's your boss. You calling him a liar?

Sadly, if they cut the price by 100$ as everyone wants them to, they will easily lose another 900million + from the PS3. Those PS3's in their warehouses still cost 800$ to make, the savings Sony should have seen for the PS3 would have no effect until after all of the warehoused units are sold off and production is ramped up again. Right now production is at a bare minimum, meaning it could still cost 800$ for every PS3 that is still slowly trickling off the line due to contract deals with the assemblers, parts dealers etc.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Yeah, right. With sales going lower and lower, sony is basically forced to slash prices.

So, I have no doubt that they have a cut planned coming soon.

Well Microsoft barely felt the Xbox losses, so Sony would survive this, even if they would lose more.

And with them selling about half of what they ship, they may have to cut prices, to sell more, to get the volume up, assuming they have no other options at the time.

EDIT : oups this is the same  informations in fact but this is the FIRSt news :

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/net/news/20070606nt0b.htm

try of translation :

Ryôhi Chubachi from Sony Corporation:
Considering the low sells of PS3, they don't exclude a price cut for the PS3 : "the possibility of a price cut is still not exclude"

==> WHEN ?
HOW MANY ?

Note that PS3 need a price cut AND good game for improve the sells
A price cut alone will not be sufficient since, in japan, the console is not expensive, but is not selling too

I am not trying to sound mean here, but that is $800 per console already spent.  If they don't cut the price, the units don't get sold and Sony losses all that money permanently.  If they sell it at a loss they at least recoup some of their losses.

I agree, It is already spent, at least they could stimulate some cash flow of of the PS3, then if it sells as good as they want, then they can mass produce, and wiegh in at the lower price and attract more developers and try and secure exclusives!

Honestly, I might speak for other ps3 owners but with a price cut,/possibility of exclusives, this might end up being a nice xmas present. Even some wii/360 owners may pick one up as well....who knows?

$1 (US) is roughly 120 yen

Over the next 12 months Sony Gaming's biggest money maker (the PS2) will continue to see declining sales while neither the PSP nor PS3 increase in sales enough to compensate; the result of this will be that similar operating expenses will result in greater operating losses for the division.

Now, it is possible that the PS3 will see a price reduction but I wouldn't expect much more than $50 or $100 ... A $100 price reduction could (potentially) put Sony as a whole into the red, and a $200 price reduction certainly would produce large losses which would upset investors.

the only way they will cut the price on the ps3 is if they find a cheaper way to make bluray players. If they do that, I have no doubt in my mind that the ps3's price will go down.

The dvd in the ps2 were not the best on the market, so why dont they release an alternate ps3, without blue ray, and make blue ray an option???
