Forums - Nintendo - Is Wiiware really this bad?

If someone steals your PS3 they could access your credit card number, copy the card and spend a lot more than $500.

Yes it is unlikely, but possible.

@bdbdbd, I don't think that is true, a number of times I have counted the coins between mario hitting the blocks, never all at once but I am pretty sure it is 13 between each block hit whatever size the game is.

It only shows you the last 4 digits of the credit card. Thankfully, not everyone thinks like Nintendo does. Most online websites save your credit card number, too. What you're saying is that if someone steals my PC they can get my credit card because I bought a book from amazon.com.

Well that is a website storing it (and apart from Amazon and Play.com I don't pay for stuff online myself) I thought the PS3 stored it, which would seemingly make it easy to find the rest of the numbers.

Although come to think of it, it's more likely stored on a Sony server to which only your PS3 has access, which would mean that if your PS3 was stolen they could use it to buy stuff from PSN, but as they will only see the last 4 digits they wouldn't be able to copy the card to use it elsewhere.

Anyhow the point people were making is that it is not a problem at all, and the security measures are a good thing when thinking of children using points the parents don't know about. Personally I bet most people just buy the points from shops like I do.

@bloody swamp.... Say what? can I play with Mario while he is downloading... I didn't even notice, I think mine was fire mario, does he only appear when I have downloaded a certain amount or something.

I agree with Bodhesatva. I'm down to 250 blocks as it is, with only one WiiWare download. I think Nintendo greatly underestimates the value of convenience, because I sure won't be shuffling games back and forth from SD cards. Lack of memory is going to be lost impulse buys.  Sure, I'll still buy the big titles, but a quick fix is going to be trumped by no memory. We need a storage solution, now.

Funny how the pirates won't be worring about storage solutions... the homebrew channel can run from sd.

Storage is certainly a problem, but Nintendo already promised a solution for that.

The rest of it is just ignorance. Mario is the progress bar. Storing credit card numbers on a video game system is a BAAAAAD idea. I'm sure Nintendo would just love to be sued by a thousand parents who weren't aware their credit card was stored after their kid went to town and bought 30 VC and WW games.

All it asks is the number, exp. date, and security code. You should have those memorized anyway.

yeah, because I want to memorize more numbers. Why don't parents just pay attention to their credit cards? I love that my credit card is saved on PSN. The most someone can buy is a few hundred I believe. That's nothing compared to if someone actually...I dunno...stole the credit card. If my PS3 gets stolen that's $500 down the drain. Anyone who says the minutes it takes to download isn't a big deal better not be complaining about PS3 game installs. "Go to the bathroom, get a sandwich" are solutions proposed for game installs that actually make load times faster. Not having background downloading is only not a bigger deal because of the storage problem (something that many people have been complaining about that Wii owners are finally admitting). If demos were actually available for games it would be a lot worse. Mario as a progress bar is annoying, but that's a minor issue that shouldn't exist because of background downloading.

It actually annoys me quite a bit that my credit card information is probably stored in a multitude of servers around the globe, some of which aren't probably very secure, and there's very little I can do about it save from not buying anything online. I even think it's a security concern that Firefox (at least, dunno what other browsers do this) remembers what you input in a credit card purchase form, as it means that the information is stored in my computer in a non-secure manner. Of course, if somebody steals my computer, I'm already screwed, but I don't like the idea of having to change my credit card because of that.

I frankly don't understand how so many people act so indifferent about their credit cards. It's not so hard to enter the credit card number when you buy something, and if you really want convenience then it's IMO best to go the Nintendo way and use virtual currency that you can buy in chunks and spend as you please. That way it's safe and secure and convenient.

I have 38 games for my Wii, I play about 5 of them actively, the time it takes me to put in th CD, and start the game to actually playing took more time than downloading FFCC:MLAAK.

It's not like the Assassin Creed install to which I had to go outside and watch my g/f watch Opera then come back, leave and go eat a bowl of cherios then come back with a half empty bow for it to be 90% done.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Well nintendo can afford to do stuff half assed for the short-term but a proper system will be needed at some point if Nintendo want ot have some success with it.

Are you serious Imperial or are you actually some form of SDF (ie making Sony fans look like asses on purpose)

Or are you both (meaning are you Leo-J)

To be fair, the PS3 only included background downloading as of March 22nd 2007.

Because of this I wrote "and have been crucified for". If you had believed the 360 family the missing background downloading was a failure of galactic proportions for the PS3

Nintendo "gets away with it" because the greater majority of their customers honestly don't know enough about this sort of thing to care. And it's nothing new; Virtual Console has always been set up in the same sort of awkward interface. People complained (briefly) about that, yet I don't see anybody declaring VC to be a failure just because it panders less than 100% to the most dedicated users.

You're right, you did have it covered. :) But I'm sure many did not know or remember about the PS3 launching with said feature.

People on Wii Online:

"It's good for a first try, give them a chance! Honestly I don't mind friend codes or laggy games or lack of voice chat or the failure of Wii-ware or the lack of quality VC games... It adds to the charm :D"

People on PSN:

"WTF no in-game XMB? No friends list invite? Sony sucks ass!"

Inexcusable for a company worth billions. Stop defending crap services, start demanding better.
