Forums - Sony - No price cut for PS3 this year?

Sony recently announced that its target sales for this fiscal year is 10 million PS3s. Sure that is a lot, but for previus fiscal year target sales were the same and Sony sold 9.24 with not that many exclusives, now with way better line up and exclusives, those 10 million should be reachable. But isnt it than obvious that Sony does not have price cut in plan if target sales are the same? What are your thoughts? Could weak USD be one of the reasons that there is not going to be price cut? So yeah, what do you expect, will there be price cut after E3 like in 07

I think they are happy with the amount they are selling now and just want to make some money.

I think that the PS3 will either have 2 $50 price drops this year, or $100 price drop by the end of this year.
Now they won't announce that right now so they don't undermine their current sales, but it will happen, well that's what I speculate.

Hopefully it will get a price cut before the holidays sales perhaps in nowember to 299.

They will probably make small price cut in the end of the year.

I think both the ps3 and 360 need price cuts if they want to start cutting into the wiis lead.

Bring out some more PS3 games and cut the price + a cheaper slimline PS3. A FF XIII, GT 5 or God of War 3 PS3 bundle would be good for $300 US.
BTW: What are the release dates on FF XIII, GT 5 and God of War 3? The three best PS3 games yet to be released. Sometime 2009 I guess. My guess is second half of 2009 for all three of those games.

It looks like PS3 isn't going to a pricecut this year. Early 2009 seems more propable at the moment. It all depends on their strategy, on will they want to have an impact during christmas, with the expense of profits, or will they want to profit during that time.

Assuming that Sony would gain 1 million additional units sold with a pricecut worth of 100, and they would sell 3 million units without the pricecut, it would mean 300 million loss in profit (assuming after the pricecut Sony would break even with PS3), which would mean, that the 1 million additional units would need to make the 300 million back to Sony and even turn some profit.

Other things to consider when looking at Sonys this FY strategy, is that are the SCE goals set for short term or the long term. Looking at the 10 million consoles prediction, it looks like the goals have been set to short term profiting, instead of trying to profit 3 years from now (which may lead to bigger profits).

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Sony has shown no interest in a price cut this year. They are still taking a loss on the PS3 and need to raise profits more than market share. This is why they only projected to sell 10 million PS3's this FY. That's a projection based on current sales price.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

I don't see a pricecut happening. The Wii is out of reach and the 360 isn't doing all that great either. So I think both MS and Sony will leave things as they are even through the holidays. Otherwise, they will both be seriously in the red at the end of the fiscal year.
