Yeah, my fat ps2 went after a year, a bad unbalanced cd based fishing game wrecked the cd spindel inside the drive and it quit playing cd based games (purple ps2 games). Got a slim and have been happy since. Damn i should have took that game back the second i heard the unbalace in its spinning

When my ps2 DRE'd it didn't make any eird noises, but it only read 3 games out of around 20, and when it couldn't read a game the screen went dark and it said "disc read error" (i think, but it was so long ago)

Chances are thos three were either CD-based games or DVD-based games. Probably the former, given how few games were made on CDs.

When my ps2 started getting DREs a few years ago, it would only read one or the other. CDs, I think. I'm pretty sure watching too many DVDs killed it.

Try a canister of compressed air, like the others said, most come with a nozzle that will go right into your disk tray, i did it and i haven't had a problem from mine since launch day.
