 This is why the post is significant.  Not only does the Wii offer a larger install base than the PS3 in Japan, the market subset for the Balance Board is even bigger.

 

That's a kick in the PS Pants.

Like it or not, money counts... 


 Yet, I think it's highly unlikely 3rd party devs will take full advantage of the Balance Board.

the point is that the balance board install base is now larger than the ps3 install base...this means it may be easier to justify making a balance board-only game than a ps3 game

Interesting, not a single Ps2 game outsold the GC in Japan. It was fairly close though, DQ8 sold 3.6M and GC 4.0, so at some time, DQ8 can have been in front.

And so you know it, Minna No Golf (PS3) is about to outsell 360 in Japan.

I'm dissapointed with all of you saying that next up is America and Europe, they aren't finished in Japan. Total Ps3 software still > Wii Fit. The gap is currently at 3.2M, but Wii Fit is closing it!

Okay, it won't make it :(

But total X360 software then! Only 600K behind, and it is selling 20K more /week!

 This is a good point.

To make a PS3 game would be vastly more expensive then to make a Wii balance board game and it would be selling to the same sized install base.

 

I believe however, while the balance board will recieve greater support then the eye toy for the PS2 did, it will be largly overlooked as the Wii install base is greater then the Balance board install base.  If anything, many games will have tacked on balance board support and few in comparisn will be for balance board only.

Still, more support and games then the eye toy recieved is good enough for me.

Just because the Wii Fit itself sells more than PS3 in Japan doesn't guarantee success of third party games using the board. My wife is excited about Wii Fit as well as a few others I know but I wouldn't bet on them going out and buying another game that uses the board anytime soon. Just as with motion controls there is only so much you can do with the balancing board. Wii fit by itself seems to cover alot of uses for the board.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Yes, Wii Play and Wii Sports have greatly outsold the PS3 in Japan. Honestly, this was supposed to be the Wii's Holy Grail in Japan, and you're all surprised that it outsold the PS3 when 2 games have already?


Wii Fit is the Wii's holy grail in the US, not Japan.
