I love my consoles. My Wii rocks. My PS2 rocks. My PS3 rocks. I don't own a 360. Why?
Bioshock will be on the PS3 within the year, most likely. Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect will probably follow suit shortly (edit: I didn't realize MS directly published Mass Effect 1 when I first posted, I thought EA published it -- if so it will never be on the PS3). Gears sequels, Ninja Gaiden 2 (edit: will MS publish this? I thought it was Tecmo..), etc... probably not too long after that. Oblivion made this transition already. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, same thing (although a port from the original XBox, of course). Every single one of these "long-term" ports has thusfar been fantastic (edit: you could argue that Lost Planet was, at best, "not worse") -- loads of extra content, or free downloadable content, another good year of engine evolution for the games themselves, sometimes the game is even cheaper upon release than the original, yet they are great games, even greater the 2nd time around.
The only reason I wanted a 360 for was Viva Pinata, and eventually, Banjo Kazooie games (halo is decent, but I wouldn't qualify it as motivation for getting a 360, like the other titles I mentioned). Thanks to the used PS2 game glut, I have games to last me forever and a day -- I can wait for the "good" version of a timed exclusive in every case, on the PS3. MS is actually doing me, as a gamer, a favor by paying for timed exclusives -- they beta the game on all the 360s, then the real thing comes out on the PS3 a year later. PS2 games are still enjoyable, and dirt cheap, so I don't feel like I'm missing out, unless the game has a hugely fun MP aspect.
Why doesn't MS buy up some decent developers to use for 1st party exclusives like Sony? I guess since I don't own a 360, and so many people think the 360 will be replaced by a new XBox around ~2011 (I actually predict 2013, but lots of folks disagree with me), it doesn't really matter to me, as a gamer -- its all about the games, and thanks to the used games market, and the plethora of options available these days, I just don't care about timed exclusives, since waiting for them actually improves them.
Do any other PS3 owners appreciate the delayed release of great timed-360 exclusives on the PS3 as well? I *love* getting the best version of a game on a platform that frankly, I prefer, due to free PSN, HD movies, way more 1st-party exclusives, etc. MS is doing me a huge favor, as a devoted gamer, in this regard. Strange, but true. Or is it strange? Surely this is not the intent of their strategy -- to sell PS3s and PS3 games by offering up their system as the beta platform. Perhaps they underestimate the used game market (and the huge number of great PS2 games, which are even better on my 60GB PS3), and the increased patience of the console gamer crowd, which continues to increase its average age, demographically.
Its definately the 1st party games that sell the platform, to me. That's why I own a Wii. That's why I own a PS2. That's why I own a PS3. When will MS step up to the plate and make a respectable 1st-party lineup? Timed exclusives... in my case they're shooting themselves in the foot. I wonder how commonplace this is.
