Forums - Sony - PS3 Longer-term port phenominon... best thing ever?

I love my consoles. My Wii rocks. My PS2 rocks. My PS3 rocks. I don't own a 360. Why?

Bioshock will be on the PS3 within the year, most likely. Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect will probably follow suit shortly (edit: I didn't realize MS directly published Mass Effect 1 when I first posted, I thought EA published it -- if so it will never be on the PS3). Gears sequels, Ninja Gaiden 2 (edit: will MS publish this? I thought it was Tecmo..), etc... probably not too long after that. Oblivion made this transition already. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, same thing (although a port from the original XBox, of course). Every single one of these "long-term" ports has thusfar been fantastic (edit: you could argue that Lost Planet was, at best, "not worse") -- loads of extra content, or free downloadable content, another good year of engine evolution for the games themselves, sometimes the game is even cheaper upon release than the original, yet they are great games, even greater the 2nd time around.

The only reason I wanted a 360 for was Viva Pinata, and eventually, Banjo Kazooie games (halo is decent, but I wouldn't qualify it as motivation for getting a 360, like the other titles I mentioned). Thanks to the used PS2 game glut, I have games to last me forever and a day -- I can wait for the "good" version of a timed exclusive in every case, on the PS3. MS is actually doing me, as a gamer, a favor by paying for timed exclusives -- they beta the game on all the 360s, then the real thing comes out on the PS3 a year later. PS2 games are still enjoyable, and dirt cheap, so I don't feel like I'm missing out, unless the game has a hugely fun MP aspect.

Why doesn't MS buy up some decent developers to use for 1st party exclusives like Sony? I guess since I don't own a 360, and so many people think the 360 will be replaced by a new XBox around ~2011 (I actually predict 2013, but lots of folks disagree with me), it doesn't really matter to me, as a gamer -- its all about the games, and thanks to the used games market, and the plethora of options available these days, I just don't care about timed exclusives, since waiting for them actually improves them.

Do any other PS3 owners appreciate the delayed release of great timed-360 exclusives on the PS3 as well? I *love* getting the best version of a game on a platform that frankly, I prefer, due to free PSN, HD movies, way more 1st-party exclusives, etc. MS is doing me a huge favor, as a devoted gamer, in this regard. Strange, but true. Or is it strange? Surely this is not the intent of their strategy -- to sell PS3s and PS3 games by offering up their system as the beta platform. Perhaps they underestimate the used game market (and the huge number of great PS2 games, which are even better on my 60GB PS3), and the increased patience of the console gamer crowd, which continues to increase its average age, demographically.

Its definately the 1st party games that sell the platform, to me. That's why I own a Wii. That's why I own a PS2. That's why I own a PS3. When will MS step up to the plate and make a respectable 1st-party lineup? Timed exclusives... in my case they're shooting themselves in the foot. I wonder how commonplace this is.

I bought a gamerPC instead of a 360 for the same reason although the times between ports are signifigantly less or non-exsistant. Also don't count on Mass effect making it to the PS3 or Gears of War 2. Both will however, make it to PC (mass effect in less than a week)

Sounds good to you, but for me that wouldn't be so great.
I'm happy i played Bioshock last year and Mass effect, but i don't think you mind waiting a year to play a game so fair play to you.

Plus i wouldn't count on Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Viva Pinata, Gears 2 (or 3) and many more being on the ps3.

And what the hell? waiting for the "good" version, most ps3 ports are cannon fodder until fairly recently. Don't think every good 360 exclusive is going to the ps3 just because Bioshock has.

you could have titled your thread :

Xbox360 lacks of first party support ... worst thing ever ?

Time to Work !

There are enough PS3s worldwide to easily justify the much lesser expense of porting a timed exclusive to the PS3 in pretty much every case. Mass Effect (edit: MS publishes this, it will never make the transition), some Gears sequel, Ninja Gaiden 2 all fall under this category -- publishers publish games to make money, not play MS or Sony fanboy. The only reasons FF XIII and MGS4 aren't jumping ship are probably (a) Japanese culture loyalty, and (b) they both probably take WAY over 9 GB of disc space, so a port would have to be multi-disc and not use the HDD. You can be sure that those games would hit the 360 eventually if its financially beneficial to do so.

mass effect, gears and so on only fon 360. Only because of bioshock porting you cannot wonder about things that don't exist

Well wasn't there talk a few months back about the possibility of the sequels of both Mass Effect AND Gears of war going to the PS3? People were claiming Mass Effect 2 and Gears of war 3 were planned or some shit.

I'll agree with you that the 1st party games are why I get a console. However, most those 360 games that are coming to the PS3, I don't really care for. The only games I'm interested in are the RPGs like Oblivion.

I will say to the OP, I don't mind waiting at all for a title like Bioshock or Oblivion, then again I currently have quite a few PS2 and PS3 titles to finish xD so I might be in a similar boat. But at the same time I do see the charms of getting a high quality title earlier than the competition :P

I'm not going to repeat once again what everyone else has said here, but I could go ooooon and on about all the formerly Playstation-exclusive games that have gone to Xbox.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
