Forums - Nintendo - Why Mario Kart Wii couldn't get "AAA" from critics.

Nintendo Franchise = Strike 1 point
Sequel of a Nintendo Franchise = Strike 1 point
Mario Characters = Strike 1 point
No Guns = Strike 1 point
etc.

Sure, silly things were cut out and removed, but scores seemed pretty harsh none the less.

It's pulling an 82% on GameRankings... Honestly, what do you want out of this title? It's a visually unimpressive game that's mostly a retread with some of the mistakes of Double Dash removed and motion controls added. Oh, and it has a very fun online system that is still buggered because of Nintendo's reluctance to move out of the early 90s when it comes to online play.

It's a good game but it's really not that amazing. It's fun, but it's a "fun" we've all experienced many times before in previous MK games.

Couldn't you say that about almost all games these days though?

Besides how many Mario Kart games do you play in a generation?  It's not like FPS where you begin running out of fingers and toes on which to count all of them.

That's an unfair criticism IMO.

you will find many games on wii are dumbed down in reviews.

its something you have to put up with, i havent played MKart but seen it being played at my local argos, and it looks brill, might pick that up sometime, do all copies of MKart come with the wheel ot is that a special edition?

They all come with 1 wiiwheel .Mario Kart is all about the "fun factor" which is why it will sell millions and won't give a damn about the score it gets.

Probably the best comment yet.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

simple really it wsnt a AAA calibur experience. honestly MK DS DESTROYS MK WII!

In a few weeks (when Nintendo will finally be able to supply enough copies to retailers) you will see MK above GTA 4 in sales in all the 3 zones.

So reviewers aren't stopping people from buying the game after all.

How bout the games have barely minimally since the SNES version? I was really hoping the Wii controls would make the game fresh, but it doesn't sound like they're too good.
 I don't understand the question.

I would disagree that it is mostly a retread. Snaking has been crippled, and bikes and tricks added. That changes the way the game plays very very signficantly. Each charcter also has individual stat adjustments making them all play a little different which is a first for the series. It is still a Mario Kart game of course, but it distinguishes itself quite well from its predecessors.

That said, the game is pulling a similar average that every MK game pulls on metacritic. Reviewer simply don't like a lot of the features the game has. Inevitably they all come to the same wrong conclusion that skill doesn't matter and judge from there.

Thread over.

i think you summed it up nicely.

How about being nothing more than an iteration of previous versions offering slight improvments in gameplay and graphical quality , I personaly prefer double dash.

It deserved it's score
