Forums - Sony - Can someone explain Sony's PS3 warranty for me?

I'm looking to get a ps3 for mgs4 and was considering buying a used unit. Can anyone explain to me how their warranty works...

How long it is? Do you have to be the original buyer with reciept to get it? Whats the repair charge when your system is out of warranty? Anything else i need to know...

I live in Canada so I'm looking for warranty info for that region...

I tried looking on sony's site and I discovered it 1 year but nothing more.

Any info is much appreciated.

It's one year and yes they need the recepit for proof of purchase

so from whoever you buy it ,it should come with the original receipt.(i m also in Canada)

one year on MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTS with receipt of purchase.

Basically, if it breaks from no outside causes it is covered for the first year so long as you have a receipt to prove you bought it.

I see...thanks guys.

Is there a fixed repair fee...like 100 bucks or something similar...if the console is not under warranty or you don't have a receipt? Or does sony want you to send it in and then charge you according to the issue?

I've heard fee's of around $150,  but i'm not 100% sure about this.  Are you getting this used unit from a store or from ebay or somewhere else, and if the unit still has the original sale receipt you can purchase extended warranties through Sony.  I think 1 year is $70 and 4 years topping out at about $200.

Warranty should be two years minimum. People in Europe and PAL region pay a fortune for a PS3.

Im thinking of craigslist or a used unit from a local videogame shop... I can't wait for ebay shipping but I'd do a local pickup as well. Worst comes to worst I'll get one from best buy new but I was wondering if its wise saving 50-100 bucks and getting it used.

Its 150 dollars to get fixed because my ps3 just broke after 1year and 3 months. So im argueing with sony everyday to see if i can get it fix for free and they sound like they are just going to charge me for shipping and handling now.

Yeah that sucks man...but such is life I guess. Thanks for the info tho...

I think I'll just get a used one then and worry about fixing it with sony if it does happen. One can do everything right, eat healthy, excercise...and still get hit by a car and die... So a new console can also break if I spill coffee on it :)

Here is a link to Playstation's official outsourced repair centres in Canada:

http://mtcservice.com/goahead.htm

To have an out of warranty unit repaired cost 169$ plus taxes depending on your province. On the claim form Sony sends you with the coffin (I received on Tuesday), it states: In order to qualify for this offer (meaning the warranty), you must be the original purchaser of this product and have complied with all of the requirements and instructions from SCEA Consumer Service."

They do sometimes offer out of warranty service in special circumstances in which case you don't need a proof of purchase.
