Can someone explain Sony's PS3 warranty for me?

Is there a fixed repair fee...like 100 bucks or something similar...if the console is not under warranty or you don't have a receipt? Or does sony want you to send it in and then charge you according to the issue?

 I've heard fee's of around $150,  but i'm not 100% sure about this.  Are you getting this used unit from a store or from ebay or somewhere else, and if the unit still has the original sale receipt you can purchase extended warranties through Sony.  I think 1 year is $70 and 4 years topping out at about $200.

Im thinking of craigslist or a used unit from a local videogame shop... I can't wait for ebay shipping but I'd do a local pickup as well. Worst comes to worst I'll get one from best buy new but I was wondering if its wise saving 50-100 bucks and getting it used.
