To have an out of warranty unit repaired cost 169$ plus taxes depending on your province. On the claim form Sony sends you with the coffin (I received on Tuesday), it states: In order to qualify for this offer (meaning the warranty), you must be the original purchaser of this product and have complied with all of the requirements and instructions from SCEA Consumer Service."
They do sometimes offer out of warranty service in special circumstances in which case you don't need a proof of purchase.
