It might but there is always the possibility of a backlash. It is sometimes called the Playboy dilemma.
Playboy was first of the men’s magazines and it was quite racy and daring in its day. Then some years down the road Penthouse and others came out and made Playboy look tame and old fashioned. Penthouse took away some subscribers but more importantly it was much more popular with new young subscribers. That meant that Penthouse would inevitably grow while Playboy by attrition and not getting new young subscribers would inevitably shrink.
The obvious solution would seem to be to compete by being as pink as the new competition. However, whenever PB made a move in that direction they upset the aging and now more conservative core of their subscribers. They found themselves in a dilemma where to not go raunchy would mean a slow death but to get too explicit would result in wholesale desertion from their established subscriber base. In the end they never did find an adequate solution so they ended up compromising and that cost them a lot of subscribers but they still weren’t as successful at getting new ones. The magazine is now a mere shadow of its former self.
National Geographic is fighting the same battle, and losing in the same way.
The lesson is that you have to be very careful. If Sony doesn’t respond at all, every indication is that the Wii will just keep on getting more than its share of new gamers at their expense. If you don’t grow you inevitably shrink. If Sony is perceived by its core users as going soft and casual by trying to emulate the Wii many of its current users might desert to the Xbox as the last bastion of the hardcore gamer. Sony could end up losing part of its loyal fan base and still not necessarily compete successfully with the Wii.
In actuality, MS is facing the same dilemma so the question of who moves first could be all important. If I were MS and saw Sony moving too far to the casual side, then I would make sure I was perceived as uncompromising and hope to steal away Sony users by flying the Hardcore banner and portraying Sony as a Wii Wannabee. Or vice versa.
This could get interesting.
