Sony simply does not have the solid first party line-up to make those games work. In order to be viewed as anything other than a pathetic attempt at compying a game you have to outshine the original in some way. Character status Nintendo has a lock simply because of Mario. You could try to out-do Nintendo in pure gameplay aspects of course, but that is a tough fight no mater who you are.
If Sony were to decide to get into that "Sony Universe" style games they would be better off trying to find a niche Mario and friends has not filled. These would be the more realistic genres which would lend itself well to the PS3 fanbase. Exactly which games would be best I am unsure of, but I think it would work the best.
