I have a 42" HDTV, in GTA I have to go right up to the screen to read the phone messages. And that's with the large text. I had problems with Dead Rising as well. Some of these games need bigger text HD or not.

It's not that they don't understand, its the fact that they don't care. The primary selling point of the 360/PS3 is the HD graphics. That's their 'nextgen' advantage, and for you to truly utilise it, you're going to need an HDTV (which in the case of Sony, means another chance for them to sell you a product).
Some of these games are different cross-platform aswell. For example, the text on CD4 360 is much smaller than CoD4 PS3.
