Bullshit. I'm currently download several BR rips, each around 20-35gb. It will take a couple of days, or even a week, but its sure as hell not beyond the reach of current download speeds.
And now Im going to compare this situation to the dreamcast. The GD-ROM was supposed to make the system piracy proof, but at the end of the day it didn't - and many of the same arguments were used.
First off, remember how fast internet connections were in 1999/2000? Now keep in mind that DC games ran anywhere from 200-700mb. Although downloading DC games would take a while people would still do it. The only thing thats changed today is that people are spoiled by high speed MP3 downloads, so some people expect piracy to be fast and think that people wont try anything that takes a while.
But if downloads take to long for you, or you're afraid of legal repercussions, then just rent the game. There are a variety of UMD rippers for the PSP, and there are already BR rippers that run on the PS3 (which is where most BR movie rips come from)
Secondly; Some GD-ROM titles were larger then CDs, yet people still burned and played them. How? Scene groups would go in and recompress the FMVs or sound to get things to fit. Some went so far as to recompress textures or even remove unneeded content. The more able groups were able to split games onto dual CDs, then midway through you'd switch discs seemlessly.
Cutting down the size of PS3 games should be easy. For starters its well known that many of titles contain multiple languages, so ripping that out is trivial. Dropping down 1080p cutscenes and video to 720p is also easy, and a pretty decent space saver. If you want to go really extreme you could nock out the online or single player portions of a game, giving people the choice between which to play. I'd imagine that you could easily fit RFOM online onto a single layer DVD, which is porbably what you'd play after completing the single player.
As for storage, again its trivial. How many games do you play after beating them? How many games do you come back to months later? Deleting a game isn't impossible, so theres no need to have a multi-terrabyte rig to pirate PS3 games. A single 500gb HD would be able to hold atleast 10 games, and probably significantly more than 30 - which I'd say is more than adequate for most people. If that doesn't work you can always back up games on DVD, or just download them again.
