Forums - Sony - Did sony dodge piracy with the ps3?

First of all before talking about mod chips and such,I'm going to talk about Blu-Ray. THe blu-ray I believe now goes up to 50gb and possibly more. Most games won't go that large, but anythng over 10gb is too much for the average download speed. Then how many people have blu-ray burners? Not too many. They would either have to put their pirated games on dvds or a hdd(they bet have a terrabyte or ten of them  ready) but is a dvd possible for games not meant to be on multiple discs? I would hate to be someone downloading 50GBs especially using torrents, and this might not be the limit. The blu-ray disc will get bigger and so will games. I think there is one ps3 mod chip out compared to the tons the 360 and wii have. So did sony dodge piracy this gen on the ps3? or will the pirates catch up with them?

Piracy will probably catch up once burners and discs get cheap enough, but that'll be a while yet.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

with failure to stop piracy on PSP and PS2, I believe Sony did a fantastic job with PS3.

Yes, they probably lost between 2-3 million in console sales if it is hacked at this point, but they gained software numbers.

Good for you Sony, even though it will probably get cracked 1 year from now.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

I basically agree wtih kenobi. To sony's credit, they did use a java+ encryption, plus the tools that HDDVD used as well as a water mark.....but then again, I don't think that it will be long at all until there are a lot of BDs being sold out of some rickshaw in china for about 2.00 a pop....So, they are doing good, but eentually this will be just like the dvds.

So the BD games will be better.......but then again, not every game, heck not even half are made on a BD disk, so they wouldn't really be any better than a dvd game b/c they ARE dvd games.

I don't think bluray has affected anything, it was cracked a long time ago. For one, most games would still be small once properly packaged and two, they would just be put on the HDD.

Though, to point out, the BD drive in PS3 only reads to 2 layers, so that's 50gb max.  Subsequent versions could read discs with more layers, but games will not come out with more than 2 layers.

I'm pretty sure if movies or games get "cracked" the standard can be changed and firmware updated to lock it the PS3 down again.  Not sur, though.

I still say Sony should brick all modded PSPs just before a new model with more features comes out.  Force some repurchases.

Sony have done well with the ps3 and piracy, shame about th x360 tho lol

Bullshit. I'm currently download several BR rips, each around 20-35gb. It will take a couple of days, or even a week, but its sure as hell not beyond the reach of current download speeds.

And now Im going to compare this situation to the dreamcast. The GD-ROM was supposed to make the system piracy proof, but at the end of the day it didn't - and many of the same arguments were used.

First off, remember how fast internet connections were in 1999/2000? Now keep in mind that DC games ran anywhere from 200-700mb. Although downloading DC games would take a while people would still do it. The only thing thats changed today is that people are spoiled by high speed MP3 downloads, so some people expect piracy to be fast and think that people wont try anything that takes a while.

But if downloads take to long for you, or you're afraid of legal repercussions, then just rent the game. There are a variety of UMD rippers for the PSP, and there are already BR rippers that run on the PS3 (which is where most BR movie rips come from)

Secondly; Some GD-ROM titles were larger then CDs, yet people still burned and played them. How? Scene groups would go in and recompress the FMVs or sound to get things to fit. Some went so far as to recompress textures or even remove unneeded content. The more able groups were able to split games onto dual CDs, then midway through you'd switch discs seemlessly.

Cutting down the size of PS3 games should be easy. For starters its well known that many of titles contain multiple languages, so ripping that out is trivial. Dropping down 1080p cutscenes and video to 720p is also easy, and a pretty decent space saver. If you want to go really extreme you could nock out the online or single player portions of a game, giving people the choice between which to play. I'd imagine that you could easily fit RFOM online onto a single layer DVD, which is porbably what you'd play after completing the single player.

As for storage, again its trivial. How many games do you play after beating them? How many games do you come back to months later? Deleting a game isn't impossible, so theres no need to have a multi-terrabyte rig to pirate PS3 games. A single 500gb HD would be able to hold atleast 10 games, and probably significantly more than 30 - which I'd say is more than adequate for most people. If that doesn't work you can always back up games on DVD, or just download them again.

  1. I know people that download large torrents so waiting another few hours while they work/sleep isn't going to bother them much anyways.
  2. The PS3 does have a hard drive and is even easy to add a huge hard drive so space isn't a problem.
  3. BD burners aren't always going to be high.

BR has been cracked to hell and back, and its been like that for ages. They can change keys now, but it'd be useless.

If Sony were to intentionally try to brick modded PSPs, then they'd be in for tons of lawsuits and bad press, wether or not its well founded. But even then it wouldn't do anything since Pandoras battery can recover a bricked PSP. Oh, and thats if you could trick modded PSP owners to upgrade to a firmware that bricks handhelds in the first place.
