Many people bought a PS2 for one (or a couple) of games that interested them. After people owned a PS2 they continued to buy "good" games because they were available for a platform that they already owned. There were probably a ton of people who owned a PS2 that would have bought Metroid Prime, Halo or Super Mario Sunshine if they were available for the PS2 but were unwilling to spend an additional $200/$300 to own the game system to play the game on it.
If Halo 3 was being released exclusively for the PS3 I'm certain Blue3 would be hyping it to no end ...
People who buy an XBox 360 for Halo 3 this year will be likely to pick up a copy of GTA 4, at the same time people who buy and XBox 360 for GTA 4 will also be likely to pick up a copy of Halo 3, and there will also be people who will buy an XBox 360 simply because both games are available for it.
