Forums - Sony - Haze developer says it's not "true HD". Performance more important.

It'll still output at 720p and Haze still looks very nice. Honestly resolution matters more on PCs, not consoles.

I would argue it only matters on PC games if they have a lot of text. I could play any FPS at 640x480 without complaint.

Well, of course you can play PC games at a resolution 640*480 you will see a difference if you jump to say 1024 * 768. It'll look a lot nicer.

 Wow i'd probably cry after 5 mins of 640 X .

So long as it's fun...

Now if the gameplay sucks also, there will be problems.

I guess the holy altar Sony has forsaken the Haze developers and chosen not to bestow the true "powah of teh C3LL" and HD gaming goodness unto them.

Ah well, the only people this will bother are the people who were obsessed with 1080p/720p from the start. The rest of us who shrug and ask if it's a fun game regardless will be fine.

Only when a game has claims of being some kind of graphical powerhouse/console showcase does it matter what the native resolution is.  For instance, since Halo 3 was a vaunted exclusive and we heard that the early demos were "rendered" or "gameplay" (at least a lot of people online claimed they were), and it stood to reason that the devs would beef up the visuals as much as the console allowed, it became somewhat relevant that the visuals were in 630p or whatev.  Not all THAT relevant in the end...more important that it looked decent and played decently, but still.

Haze, by contrast, was a nearly-scrapped 3rd party game that was declared PS3-exclusive later in its development.  It stands very much to reason that pragmatics would limit the res.

Given all of this, if KZ2 really is 720p with smooth framerate, it could be a pretty impressive achievement (as it already looks like it will be), since apparently we are more used to HD games being a bit below 720p!

Framerate should come first, which is why they should have lowered the resolution further so they're not stuck at 30fps. That's embarrassing.

Also, there's no "true" HD here. 576 is pal standard def. You know, the resolution the PAL PS2s rendered in.  If something is 720p, 1080i or 1080p, then it's HD.  Those are the HD standards.  Anything else is not HD, so you're either dealing with standard def (480i / 576i) or you're dealing with enhanced definition.

There is a small detail, Halo 3 rendered 2 frames with different llight setups @ 630p them combined them using post-pro to make just one frame, only to emulates HDR, neither Haze or KZ2 use the same technique...

By me:

Agreed that it will mostly matter how they look and play vs one another...

Well, we all knew that the PS3 took a lot more understanding to develop for. Plus this was a multi-plat originally. if the game plays well, I don't really care to much.

If MGS comes out at a high resolution, and plays well, it's proof that it can be done with the hardware. It just takes more time to make the libraries so the smaller developers can take advantage.

Also, just because the PS3 and 360 can do 1080p, does not mean we should expect every game to take advantage of it. If they want to spend there time and money going other directions, then so be it.

Oh, and lastly, with these great upscales, it's probably going to become common practice in the future. In the end, you most likely get better visuals out of the resources available to you in the long run.

To use Halo for an example. I am sure they first played it at 720p, and realized the lower rez/more features approach looked better.

I will take better looking over more resolution any day.
