Forums - Gaming - More Capcom Wii Support? Okami Selling Less

Being that Okami never did particularly well on the PS2 I don't think Capcom is going to hold the poor performance of Okami against the Wii ...

I suspect that Capcom ported Okami because they wanted to give such a critically acclaimed game a second chance to perform well; at the same time I don't think it stood a chance being that every retailer I have gone to didn't cary a single copy of Okami.

So I wasn't the only person to experience this.  I hate getting things from Best Buy but it really was the only store around to have the game.

Capcom made a number of errors with Okami on Wii (from a business standpoint):

1. Very poor marketing: aiming the game at the same audience that already played or passed on it on PS2 isn't going to move many copies. It would probably have done a lot more good to run an ad for it in non-endemic magazines or websites instead of preaching to the choir.
2. Poor retail support: because of the lack of confidence in the product (vis-a-vis the anemic marketing/ad spend) retailers aren't going to support a game that already, essentially, failed on a system with a much, much larger userbase.
3. Priced it out of its market: if you're going to market to the core gamer that's already popped for it on PS2 at a pricepoint higher than other ports that actually give you more than the game they're ported from (e.g. RE4), you need to price it accordingly--this game shouldn't have been more than $30 new, tops.

Essentially it's one big missed opportunity for Capcom. Zak & Wiki (essentially a classic adventure game of all things!) proves you can market almost solely to the niche (harder than hardcore, if you will) gamer on Wii and they will support the product--but that's only if you're offering them something new at the price, not a lackluster port of an old game.

Still it would be a mistake if they don't release Monster Hunter 3 for Wii, that game will be huge in japan and Wii sales are gonna double over there...

so, our figures are still higher than the actual? Damn..that's awful

I absolutely agree. I dont think Okami's sorry performance really has any bearing on which projects Capcom is going to do/not do on Wii. After all, it was a pet project of Capcom USA, not Capcom Japan (and seeing the sales of Zak & Wiki, RE: UC and RE4 there is no way you're going to see a reduction in their fairly anemic Wii output, let alone a nixing of Monster Hunter 3--the fact that Capcom Japan moved the game over to Wii should speak ear-shattering volumes about what they think of the machine).

When it comes down to it, the only thing that the poor showing of Okami might hurt are the guys that lobbied for it inside Capcom USA (assuming the project ended up losing a substantial amount of money or the numbers are grievously shy of what they forecasted internally).

they shouldn't be complaining since RE games sold above 1 million, where RE 4 is heading towards 2 million!!

Zack and Wiki is still selling, so the sales are growing, even if it's slow.....

i think poor sales of some 3rd parties is because most of the great games launch along with Nintendo's games, and also there are so many games been released on Wii, that it's normal for some not to sell that well.....

Wii console: 0595 8808 5698 2709
Super Smash Bros Brawl: 1161 1357 5188

Mario Kart Wii: 1633 4506 4319

PES 2008: 1633 5820 0347

DragonBall Z BT 3: 3823 9760 9484

Pokemon Battle Revolution: 3480 2645 9186

everytime when I am reading your posts I'm hearing it exactly like Leni would say it (arrogant british english), very funny, isn't happening with any other avatars.

Well, I guess that means this game was never destined to succeed after all. Oh well...

Well let's look at it objectively...

They changed the games' visual style (a little).
They removed the ending credits.
They screwed up the fleetfoot move by mapping it to the nunchuck waggle.
They added nothing.
They fixed none of Okami's other big problems.

It's a good game, but there is honestly no reason to buy the Wii version if you bought the PS2 version. Capcom also shipped hardly any units. I went to 3 stores before I found one that had Okami in stock and the ones that didn't had no idea what it even was.

Capcom did a crappy port job and so they're getting crappy sales.

But nobody bought the PS2 version...

I want to buy it eventually. (one version or the other...)

However i just got Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics in the mail.

So it's going to be a while... I can't even decide what kind of character I want to build first... a scientist or doctor type perhaps.  Since INT is actually supposed to mean something.

I recommend a thief-ish type character.   Then again, I usually make the mistake of angering the wrong people so an easy getaway is my friend...
