Blu Ray is one of the reasons, but not the sole reason. Sony f-uped this generation in so many ways. BR wasn't ready for mass adoption yet; the price of the PS3 was too high such that there are many people who want it but won't shell out the cash until the price goes way down; the marketing was pompous; lack of high profile games relative to their competition; huge delays with what was supposedly their real first system seller (ie. MGS4); etc.

They can still end up in second place worldwide, but this generation is a wash for them.  I say it's important to finish off this generation strong simply so they can push themselves forward into the next one.

So, don't you guys think that the lack of price cut from both Microsoft and Sony's behalf is down to the shitty dollar atm?

Spot on.  Arrogance and over reliance on perceived brand loyalty has severely harmed them... speaking as a PS1 and PS2 owner.

"The next gen starts when we say so" that was just so embarrasing.

I think it is a combination of the weak dollar, and that it would be the cheapest blu-ray player.

The blu ray association has refused to license out the technology so that other manufacturers can produce cheaper units. They are artificially keeping the standalone players prices high by doing this, of course they say that the real reason is to keep the quality up, but we all know that is their lame excuse. Allowing Sony to sell the PS3 to sell for less than a standalone player would remove any chance of profit from their artificially high prices.




If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

ssj12 said that Sony announced the PS3 would be retailing for $300US by the end of the year around November this year. So the price cut will happen. PS3 price cut is possible for 2008.

I wouldn't say it's impossible but if they were "forced" to drop the price of the console right now, they can expect to be back in the black by the year 2213 instead of next year. Sony has to make a profit on its game division again and a price drop would only hurt them right now, not help.

So they will reduce the price of the PS3 and continue to lose money, undercutting their own stand alone players where they presumably make money.... thats commercial suicide? dont you get it?


 The manufacturing costs of PS3 will have been reduced by August this year.

I don't think they will drop the price in 2008, they will prefer profits right now.
