Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Smash Bros. Brawl Official Updates

I can't wait until they show Fox's video, and I'm not talking about the arwing one.

Around the Network

I think we'll be having quite a few boring updates during the next few weeks due to having seen lots of this stuff in the E for All videos. Hopefully they'll be balanced out by exciting stuff like new characters etc.

Not that I don't think that video deserved its own update, but I think he could have accompanied it with something else. It just screams multiple update time. I think updates are slowing a little due to the delay. Originally we would only have a month and a half left, now there are an additional 3 months of updates to fill up.

man the donkey kong country remix was awesome. It almost made me forget how pitiful DKs franchise is today. If only they could make a game like the SNES classic.

By the way. Lol did anyone else notice the family guy reference at the end with the pointing?

19: ?
20: Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog)
21: DS Lite Logo (Nintendo DS Console)

With the inclusion of the Sonic (And now the DS) icon to this list, the FAQ now has a slot for one new franchise! Speculate on which it may be!

There is only one known icon that has not yet been used, and that is the Game & Watch Face from SSBM.

In previous postings of this list, I have seen a number of posts along the lines of “What is
this list?”, “Why are they arranged like that?”, “Why is Wario number 16?”, “Why does the list only go to 18?” etc. To prevent these kinds of questions, I’ve included a Mini-FAQ (Next Post) which I hope will answer some of these questions.

Before we begin, I would like to draw attention to one point in particular, and that is: “Why does the list only go to 21?” It’s simple. This list only goes to 21 because that is the highest icon number we know of, the DS icon. There may be, and probably are, numbers with icons higher then that. We just don’t know of them.

Icon FAQ

So what the heck is this list all about anyway?

As most of you have probably noticed, every update has a little icon in the top left corner. Some of these updates get the generic Smash icon (the one that’s behind the percentages of the Wire Frames, the Hands and Giga Bowser in Melee), however, most updates have icons that relate to the franchise they originated from. (Mario has the Mushroom, Link has the Triforce, etc.)

If you right-click these icons and view the source link for the images, you’ll see a link which ends in “world_b_##.gif”, where the ## is the number for whichever icon you are viewing. Taking the numbers on the end of these links and arranging them numerically gives us our above list. Also, the “b” in the link can be interchanged with a “w” to alternate between black and white backgrounds. There’s nothing fancy hidden in that part.

Since this was first discovered way back with the Mario and Link update, there have been many theories has to how these series corresponded with their numerical order, from it being simply alphabetical, to being the same as chronological release of the series. One of these theories was that the icons were loosely based on an order that went from original SSB icons, to Melee icons, to Brawl icons. As more icons were released, it became apparent that this tread was indeed being seen, so it is widely accepted as correct for the time being. It was previously thought that 3rd Party characters in Brawl would have their icons at the end of the list, but Snakes placement on the list has proven this is incorrect.

But hold on! What about items? Might they have their own icons, which would throw off this list?
As the icons are seen behind the damage percentages, and as items do not receive a damage tally, they don’t have their own icon. In Melee, we had the items like the Flipper (Balloon Fight) and Lip’s Stick (Panel de Pon) that were from games without playable characters and still had no icon. Dr. Wright has shown us this is the case for Brawl also, as his update featured the Brawl icon, and not some icon from SimCity.

So why bother showing us this list anyway? What’s the significance?

Excellent question. Prior to the announcement of the “Smashville” stage people had used this list to determine that there would be at least one other new series making its way into Brawl. This is because adding all the known icons at that point added up to 17, one less then Pit’s number of 18. To clarify, the Smash icon sits in the number one spot, and the original Smash gives us ten icons (Mario/Luigi & Pikachu/Jigglypuff share an icon each) totaling eleven icons. Adding in the three from Melee (Ice Climbers, Fire Emblem and Game & Watch) gave us fourteen, and adding the new icons in Brawl that are known (Kid Icarus, Wario and Metal Gear) (Meta Knight and ZSS don’t count, as they have the Kirby and Metroid icons respectively.) gave us our seventeen. This list was also used to determine whether a Mother character would be in (That symbol was the last SSB icon revealed at 7, so many assumed it would go there) and we may also be able to follow this up with Game & Watch’s inclusion if his icon turns out to be 13.

Because AC has a franchise icon along with all the other playable fighters, many believe that AC will have a playable fighter as well. However, it is still not yet known whether an AC character will join the fighting roster. The inclusion of the DS icon is seen by the disbelievers as refuting this theory, but others believe that the DS icon may be the except, or that it may have a character itself. Who knows?

Alphabetic Order? (Flawed Theory)
A short while after Ike was updated, thus revealing the Fire Emblem icon, a new theory about the icons began circling the internet. This theory involved taking Japanese names related to the symbols, translating them to semi-English, then using this as a basis for an alphabetically organized update list. This theory is FALSE. I won’t go into the details here, but rather pointed out the flawed reasoning behind it. Let’s take a look at a few of these flaws…

1. (Bad Translations): The translations used to make this theory work are often very awkwardly done, in attempts to make it work. In particular, the translation for Fox is very wrong, and does not even contain the correct symbols used in his name.

2. (Inconsistancy): The theory constantly alternates between the title of the series (Hoshi no Kirby) and a main character name (Rinku). If there was any sort of order, it would a least not switch between the 2 so randomly.

3. (The translation itself): Japan does not handle the translation of the game into English. That is done in the States. Why, then, would the Japanese base their alphabetization on the English language system? It’s stupid and pointless. Which brings us to our point four…

4. (Alphabetization method): Japan has an alphabetization system that is completely different from the English one. If there was any alphabetical order, why would they not just stick with their mother tongue and use their own system? Again, it’s confusing and unnecessary.

And I’ll also shoot down the most common counter-argument:

But they’re clearly all alphabetical, it must be true!
False. Like I stated earlier, this was conceived at around the time Ike’s update was released. A lot of the icons were known at that point, and the original creator used whatever he could to make things fit what was known. This also helps explain why it randomly switches between series name and main character name (Point 2 above).

If you see anyone using this theory as a basis for their assumptions, they are wrong. Ignore them, or better still, endeavor to explain why they are wrong.

Nintendofangirl: You and me both sister. But like Bacon with Fox, it's the same cycle for Zelda and you.

Is this by update or by screenshots?

It is by each update. If Fox is shown 4 times in a single times, it only counts as one. There are some exceptions. I do not count characters that appear in the menu.

examples: Mario in "Special Brawl" and Samus under "Names" I still count videos but I did not count Link under "Snake Joins the Brawl" because he appears in a screenshot already on the site. Some other characters appear in screenshots in that video too, like Wario, however Wario is shown in gameplay footage in that video too.
