1.7M in North America during the game's entire lifespan?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
You've got to be kidding! Melee sold 4 million in the US, and it did it on the Gamecube. The Wii is going to sell many times more than its predecessor, and this time the game is many times more polished to boot.
We can already say for sure that we're looking at the best selling fighting game of all-time here, as well as one of the best selling games of the entire generation. I'd say it has a very good chance of hitting ten million copies wordwide if the new gamers the Wii has been attracted get interested in it, and I can definitely see that happening because of how beginner friendly Smash Bros. is.
If you were referring to sales this year, then 1.7M looks like a pretty realistic number though. =P |
In terms of sales, this game has nothing going against it.
1) Hype: The Smash Dojo getting updated every day keeps hardcore fans interested every day (just look at the update thread) and then just about every gaming news site has a weekly dojo dump. If you're a gamer you know about this game.
2) Accessibility: This is one of those gems that's easy to pick up and difficult to master. Little 8 year old Timmy can pick this up and play, 14 year old twat Bobby can play with his buddies, and 30 year old Jim can relive memories and master each character to become the online master even nobody will know who he is just like in real life.
3) Recognizable Figures: Does this one even need to be said?
4) Advertising: No real advertising yet, but that's because the game is still a few months away. I guarantee you that we'll see SSBB We Would Like To Play commercials and advertising tie ins with other products similar to Halo (though on a much smaller scale). Though I doubt any of the commercials will be as awesome as the
N64 one.
5) Very Well Known Franchise: Every Nintendo fan knows what Smash Bros is and every Nintendo fan loves it like every XBox fan loves Halo (I know not every but generalizing here).
6) Very Well Received Franchise: The N64 Smash was an instant success, SSBM improved on everything in N64 and was an even bigger success, and SSBB is improving on SSBM.
7) Online: For how many months have people been saying
I'll get a Wii and SSBB if SSBB is Wi-fi enabled? yeah, even with friend codes this is a huge attraction.
8) Rated T for Teen: Sure, it's no E for Everyone but still something parents wouldn't mind buying their kids since it's cartoon violence.
So yeah, this game really has nothing going the wrong way for it. Name one other game that has this many positive things going for it. I would say that 1.75M for North America in 2007 would be on the plausible low end of predictions.
-edit-
I even forgot one:
9) Beautiful Game: Yes, it doesn't match 360 and PS3 but you cannot deny that this is an incredible looking game. Nobody will be able to say that this game is last gen because they've just spent so much time perfecting everything.
