Xbox 360 selling 20% faster than original Xbox

Historical NPD data challenges Microsoft's assertion from Wednesday that Xbox 360 will "win" the console war, having reached 10 million units sold in America before both Wii and PlayStation 3.

Xbox 360 kitty likes his console, but doubts the sales logic

According to official NPD data, which tracks North American console sales, the Xbox 360 took 30 months to reach the 10 million units sold milestone, 20 percent faster than the original Xbox, which didn't achieve the same mark until month 36.

While an improvement, the mild increase casts doubt on Microsoft's assertion from Wednesday in which Xbox vice president Don Mattrick said: "History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle."

Assuming the Xbox 360 maintains its 20% sales margin over its predecessor, taking into consideration steady global sales, the 360 will go on to sell 28.8 million worldwide units over a four and a half year life span.

If current sales velocity and history are to be believed, the projected life-to-date sales of Xbox 360 would be a far cry from the 125 million-selling PlayStation 2, which "won" the last generation battle, and the Nintendo Wii, which has sold 24 million units worldwide in only 18 months, this after launching a full year later than Xbox 360.

Nintendo is expected to surpass both native Xbox 360 sales and the 10 million U.S. milestone within a few months time, given that the console sells approximately 500,000 units per month in the States alone.

This one says 14.6M XB and about 19M X360 at the same time into life. Neither had staggered launches, so should be OK. That's 23% if I'm not mistaken, so these numbers are fairly close to ours.

Having said that, you can see that lately, the 360 has been going faster than the XB (for the first 75weeks they were virtually tied)

didn't the original xbox do really bad? I would hope the 360 is doing better than bad

The original Xbox did allright for a while, but didn't really last more than 3 years, after that it dropped off, so if the 360 can last 3.5 years at least, it should make 30M with ease.

X360

2,5 years -> 18,8M
4,5 years prediction -> 28,8M ???

The 360 will reach at least 35M at 4,5 years of life.
Better sales + bigger lifespan will lead to 40-45M X360 consoles at 2011's end against 24M Xbox 1.

Predictions: 2008/2009

Wii 42-45 M / 71-75M

X360 24-26M / 38-40M
PS3 20-21 M / 30-34M

X360-fans rejoice!

Despite it's higher price at $349, compared to Xbox at $179 for the comparable time period, the X360 is already outselling it's older brother by a wide margin.

Add to that the extented time span between generations this time around, between the X360 and the release of Xbox 3, which most people estimate will be in Nov 2011, and the X360 will have 6 effective years of sales compared to only 4 for the original Xbox.

With just the current sales increase of at least 23% it already means the X360 will sell 1.23 x 24 million = 29.5 million consoles.

If we add the longer life for X360, 6 instead of 4 years, means it will sell 1.5 x 29.5 million = 44.25 million units!

And if we add the yet unused potential in the X360 to drop it's price to mass market level (below $200) could mean at least another 20% increase over the original Xbox, 1.2 x 44.25 million = 53 million X360s!

It's good to be an X360-fan. Millions of gamers want the X360 experience. Already 19 million consoles sold. 12 million subscribing members on Xbox Live.

And most likely more than 50 million X360s sold in this generation!

Great job Microsoft!!!!

Wow, its doing alright I guess...I wish they'd drop the price already so more of my friends could buy the 360 already...

when the new chip jasper is out i will buy my second 360!!!!!

Good news the 360 has significantly improved upon the XBox. 360 has good third party support and is selling well despite hardware issues with the 360.
