Yeah. I'm starting to think jRPGs and hardcore Japanese games is going to be the big loss this generation. The younger generation wants cooking, housekeeping, pet, and various daily routine simulators, while the older generation that likes jRPGs is waning off.

Or... maybe the publishers of JRPGs should try putting them on the platform that's selling like hotcakes before crying over terrible sales. There's been two RPGs of any note on the Wii: Super Paper Mario and Dragon Quest Swords. Neither one really fits the mold of a traditional RPG, and neither one was exactly top quality. Both sold more than 500k copies (in Japan only) - more than any game released on the PS3 so far.

I mean, the Gamecube didn't exactly sell RPGs too well last generation either in Japan (unless you count Animal Crossing, which is really a stretch). Paper Mario was the best at 458k, and the next-best after that is FF: Crystal Chronicles (358k) and Tales of Symphonia (314k).

The second-place console in Japan just doesn't sell much software, period. It's not a genre thing. (Another quick example: the DS and PSP seem to be selling RPGs just fine.

Of course Mario and Dragon Quest will sell alot.

or take a look at (Japanese quality games on Wii):

Zack and Wiki - 30k

No More Heroes - 40k

It's sometimes better to put these kind of games on the 360 over there.

There is this problem also...

I think we will know where Japanese devs stand on the Wii at E3 and TGS.  Right now, I don't think there is very much incentive to put quality stuff.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

The Wii hardware ratio the the 360 is 10:1 overall

Edit; Total Ps3 to 360 is less than 4:1 for total hardware.

Sullla that has been my opinion for a while. Third parties just don't want to make a boat load of cash it seems.

Why is this week boring? Cause PS3 didnt sell as well as you wanted, lol.
Exciting week, seems like Wii sales might experience a small weekly avrg rise, thanks to MKWii I guess.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)

@Final... Former generation was entirely different. RPG's were on a productive scale, you wouldn't believe it. Therefore.. how can gamers change so fast? I haven't changed of being a RPG fan. I have a WII and a DS like I had a GBA and GC in the former generation. I have a PSP and PS3 like I had a .... well PS2 only in the former generation. Despite the fact I have a WII / DS you don't see me buying brain training games, cooking and how to run your houshold. Just about 2 years ago, RPG's were dominating the lists all the time and all of the sudden... poof... gone. Not a surprise if they keep on waiting with releasing or releasing on the wrong consoles which make the game bound to sell bad Plus, Paper Mario isn't really a RPG, more an action / adventure, like Folklore is on the PS3 and Dragon Quest Swords is just a short hack n slash game, nothing more. You can't compare these games with the almighty Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Tales of..., Shin Megami Tensei, or any other kind of die hard RPG.

Plus, Paper Mario isn't a RPG, more an action / adventure, like Folklore is on the PS3 and Dragon Quest Swords is just a short hack n slash game, nothing more. They haven't disapeared. They just don't own PS3s by and large... and honestly I don't think are going to. At least if the RPG fans I know are any indication.

Aside from Final Fantasy... RPGs are somewhat a low budget affair, the graphics aren't ever near top of the line. You ask an RPG fan their favorite RPG game, often times it's something from a past generation. Games like Earthbound and RPG are often favorites even among the most hardcore RPG gamers.

For the pure RPG gamer... who almost plays nothing but RPGs... I think the PS3 doesn't really present a good value. Maybe it's just me though... but the pure RPG gamers i know tend to be some of the cheapest gamers out there.

I don't think the PS2 started getting some big(non FF) RPG sales until after the PS2 came down to a "reasonable" price.

Those RPG fans may just have a Wii and are waiting for Wii RPGs. Or they may have a PS2. Waiting for the PS3 to reach around 250 (or the Wii to get RPGs.)

Either way those core RPG gamers who play almost nothing but RPGs are what keep most RPGS like Shin Megami and Suikoden and the like running.

Final Fantasy 13 is the only chance to change that. It will sell huge. The question is however.... will it lure in that core RPG demographic? Or will it just sell to the "RPG casuals" that only play 2 or 3 RPGs a generation... mostly with "Final" and "Dragon" in their titles.

If not... RPGs will have to leave the PS3 and move to the Wii/DS/PSP.

PS3 seems to be doing ok SRPG wise at least.

Yeah, Japan seems to have the tendency to change overnight and do so all at once.  In America, people liked FPS games last two generations and still like FPS games today like there is no tomorrow, despite the Wii being here.

The anime industry is also not in such good shape as it used to be too, but that's a different story, although both go hand in hand with jRPGs.  My guess is that the jRPG / anime scene is now reduced to the people that hang out in Akihabara all the time.

Yet PS2 and DS RPGs are still selling well to my knowledge aren't they? (in comparison anyway... for no FF and DQ RPGS less then a million is the norm.)
