Forums - Sony - SONY - PS3 to sell 10 Million THIS Fiscal Year --- FIRST Signs of trouble??

SO as we all know SONY has predicted PS3 will sell 10 Million this FISCAL Year (March 08 - March 09)...

Ok now LAST Fiscal Year (March 07 - March 08) year PS3 sold 9.24 Million...

Now have a look at this graph ---

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS3&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=PS3&reg3=All&start=39173&end=39579

So as we can ALL see PS3 sales were nearing 50 - 70K after APril last year.....THIS year so far Ps3 sales have NEVER dropped below 150K & stay usually well above 160K

WIth MGS4 coming next month + 80GB coming back to America...it is excpected to stay that way...

PS3 has also been seeing a 200% - 300% increase in NA sales YOY & since the start of april even upto a 50% - 100% in EU Sales (last year after the launch they sank down)..Ofcourse JAPAN has seen YOY go down..

Now was the going down in JApan ENOUGH for SONY to make that ridiculous prediction! Or is this an indication of SONY starting to lose faith in the PS3..maybe tying up loose ends & ye know killing it off (j/k)

OR does it mean NO Price Drop?

Whatever it means its VERY stupid of SONY to predict only a 760K increase in sales when this years PS3 sales have been outselling last years ALMOST by 100K on a weekly basis..

What are your thoughts??

They now have the ability to raise forecasts periodically throughout the year, bumping stock prices and keeping investors very happy.

Actually, I doubt the average investor really cares that much. The profit/loss is a far more important statistic.

They're just being far more realistic than they have been in the past ...

Over the next 12 months the PS3 will still be far more expensive than most people have ever spent on a gaming system regardless of whether they reduce the price; the ecconomy of the world is slowing down and it will be more difficult to sell luxury items like HDTVs; and the additional features that the PS3 offers (Like Blu-Ray) will not suddenly become remarkably popular in the next 12 months.

I think it means.

1) No price drops.

2) They are playing it safe, because while investors aren't going to care if you slightly raise your projections, they're going to go berserk if you slightly lower them.

Recent reports that blu-ray is failing to widen it's appeal at the rate that was expected probably hurts their projection numbers as well.

Last year they missed their initial targets and had to change them down. They don't want to do that again, so Sony have been pessimistic this time round.

As for a price cut, I still think its likely to happen this year, whether its $50 or $100.

@happysquirel

slowing economy & whatnot

but do you personally expect Ps3 to sink back to what i was doing last year??

Trying not to be too cocky springs to mind which is a welcome attitude from a multi-million corporation. Also, with the Electronics division of Sony posting record profits (thank the Bravia), they can afford this, and say that PS3 beat their expectations next year.

10mil is a sure shot. I think this may mean finishing off the year at this price (2008 not fiscal).

I don't think Sony will have another price drop until January 2009. Sony knows 2 things for sure at this point.

1) PS3 will eventually beat 360 world wide

2) PS3 will never catch the Wii in any region.

They know they will be second no matter what so now they are focusing on profit. To maximize profit they will try to squeeze as much revenue out of Holidays 08. If they drop the price they will eat away a lot of their potential profit. PS3 will have plenty of demand over the holidays so there is no reason to drop the price any time soon.
