Forums - Sales - PS3 price drop, anytime soon? (take 2)

(Hopefully this is readable)

I've wondered for a little while now why Sony has not gone ahead and dropped the price of the PS3. I know they dropped the price last year before E3, but why not again sometime soon? I was hoping maybe a few forum members could chime in with their thoughts on why Sony should or shouldnt. First, they need to stay relevent  in Japan. I know MGS is coming, and I know games are what truly drives sales, but c'mon! Sony numbers recently have been abysmal in Japan, why not try and get a little something going? In Europe it could serve as something of a KO blow to the 360 which has struggled a bit as of late despite a price drop. In America to me it makes the most sense because of the solid momentum the PS3 has built recently, why not try to cut into MS's lead a little bit, and push a little harder? I'm no economist or anything, and I'm sure there's very good reason why the people making decisions at Sony are staying put. In addition, its obvious the last price drop worked very well and sales have increased to very respectable numbers. However, to me it seems like the PS3 is still in need of more momentum, especially in the US and Japan. While I'm no fanboy, I'm certainly rooting for Sony here in this gen, and I'm a little disappionted Sony isn't being as aggressive as I would be. Any thoughts? Too much text?

Simple. Business don't care about console wars as much as they care about money. Yes competition will decrease your bottom line, but still if you aren't making money there is no point in doing what you are doing.

The consumers that will jump in after price cut will most likely jump in if there is a cut now or later. The people buying the consoles now obviously don't care about the price. If they dropped price they would hurt their revenue from the consumers that already are biting.

The bottom line is that the sales are fine, they are beating the 360, a price drop does not help them that much. The only reason they would do a price drop now is if they were desperate. They are a business trying to make money, and whenever you start making money and you bring in a price drop its gonna kill upcoming profits. PS3 has already put Sony billions of dollars in the hole and needs to do its job and try to make some of it back.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

They are outselling every week their main competition (X360), they have absolutely no need for a price drop, Especially, when the price drop only has limited affect.

Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

i don't know if it will affect the price directly, but the non disclosure on the latest PS3 sku to go through FCC lapses today. Hopefully more bang for your buck or a price drop.

I think that 360 needs a price drop now. Only after that Sony will cut the price for PS3.

Sony lost money last quarter so it is harder for them to drop the price now.

Despite reducing the cost of the PS3 over the last year and a half they still lost $280 million last quarter so I doubt we will see any price cut in the next 6 months. They have lost so much money in development and price gouging their hardware, so now they need to just focus on becoming profitable and continue to beat the 360 at a slow rate.

Now that PS3's worst troubles are over, there is no need to rush price drops: PS3 will have a long life and it will have its price drops during it, but it will have one soon only if it was already in Sony's plans.

Their shipment estimate for 2008 is only 10 million units. While that may be on the low side, it still means they don't see a huge uptick in sales. Which leads one to believe there won't be an early price cut.
