I'm guessing around 2010/2011
Also they shouldn't make it too powerful. Around the strength of the original Xbox would be perfect, they can port PS2 classics and create their own unique games aswell.

Just thought of something else. They might feel pressure from Apple with their iPhone/iPod Touch becoming a new "gaming platform". If that's a success, they'll need to respond accordingly.

Does anyone know how many iPod units they've sold?

Well, it's not the regular iPods, but the touchscreen iPhone/iPod Touch. Last I heard, they plan to have sold 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008, not sure about iPod Touches.

PSP is already about as powerful as PS2, so I'd expect it to be more powerful than that.

"Almost PS2" to "Xbox" level graphics is a pretty big leap.
I don't understand why everybody wants:
Bigger screen
"Next Gen" graphcs
Dual Analog Sticks
The PSP is proof that handhelds do not improve by becoming more similar to consoles. The DS is proof that innovation and simplicity results in better games. Two analogs on a handheld just isn't practical. Personally, my ideal PSP would just have a slight jump in graphics, more ergonic design/size/button layout, would be less fragile, and have less multimedia focus. Who honestly uses their PSP as an mp3 player? Or to watch movies? The only multimedia my PSP really ends up playing is porn.
Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.
Edit: missed this:
Highly arguable. That approach apparently results in more popular games, but I've seen little evidence that they're better. As it happens, even though I love the idea of the DS, there isn't a single title on it I'm interested in owning. Getting more popular, better-selling games will obviously be Sony's primary concern with its next handheld, but it may recognize that it can't compete with Nintendo on Nintendo's terms. In that case, it may try to continue filling the core gamer niche that Nintendo will likely again leave wide open. The PSP hasn't done all that shabbily on that path, after all, and most of its failures come from things that can be corrected without changing this basic strategy.
