Forums - Sales - Anecdotal Asian Sales Thread

@BKK2

Consoles in Asia:
-Japan Console Revenue: $3.3bn (for 2007)
-Consoles are rare outside Japan, very little info.

PC in Asia:
-Chinese PC market: $1.7bn (for 2007)
-South Korean PC market: $1.2bn (for 2006, which means it's more than that for 2007)
-Japanese Online market: $290ml (for 2005, before the continued online global boom in 2006 and 2007)
=$3.2bn Total
-80% of India gaming market

Ok I was wrong: Chinese and South Korean online sales aren't better than Japanese retail market, but it still proves PC is more popular than all consoles combined in Asia.

Oh, I don't disagree, online PC gaming is massive in China and Korea. The console markets there are tiny in comparison.

Really this thread is meant for SE Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea as these countries are considered a separate region by Microsoft and Sony (I'm not sure how Nintendo work it). Neither have an official presence in China, and India is in the same region as Europe.

Console gaming is bigger here, but it's dominated by pirated games.

I can attest to that. Piracy is the major factor in buying a game console here where I live, which by the way is considered as a gray market by both Sony and Microsoft. To give a brief history as to which console won in the pastPlaystation>>>>>>>>N64/Sega Saturn – playstations were easily modified and “game copies” sold for less than $1US Playstation2>>>>>>>dreamcast/xbox/gamecube – playstation2 was again easily modified and “game copies” sold for less than $3US. Though the xbox was also modified but the lack of “game copies” availability killed it.  DS=>PSP – both are almost as popular as the other with a slim edge to the ds. Ds=r4 etc etc, psp=custom firmware. Xbox360/wii>>>>>>>>>ps3 – xbox360 can be modified through hardware or through dvd drive (or something like that)  same goes for the wii. and “game copies” sold for less than $10US and if it weren’t for the 360s crapy build, probably most of the ps2 owners here would have already jumped ship and switched to the x360 or the wii.  In a nut shell, which console can be hacked is the winner. Though you cant blame them for this mentality. Original games here = an arm and a leg.  Psp360wiids = $90-$100 US per game. Personally, I hope Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo crack down on these damn pirate bastards so that their consoles would be officially released here and I can go out and buy an xbox360 and not worry about the rrod.  Plus I wont have to work about my ps3s bd dying.

In a thread I created I estimate that Nintendo is selling around 10,000 Wiis in Korea per week using VGC data.

Konami sold 280,000 games in the Asian region over the past financial year. That was 1.2% of it's global sales.

Hong Kong

In these couple of days, the price of the Wii Japan consoles had raised a lot. This was because some of the USA consoles were found that they could not be modified with current modchips!!!! Therefore, the Japan guys raised the price immediately after they got the news!!! At this moment, all of the Wii Japan consoles were "modable". On the other hand, all of the Korean version Wii consoles, which were released couple of weeks ago, were not "modable".

Unlike 360 & PS3, Wii hasn't been officially released in Hong Kong yet.

Piracy is a huge issue in Asia. Japan that is a pirate hot spot as well as all the other Asian countries such as Taiwan, China, Korea, Thailand, India, etc.
I am surprised they make much money in Asian countries where piracy laws are not strictly enforced.

The price of the game in my country is 160$
how can I buy it ?
