Forums - Gaming - Most consoles sold != best console

I agree with your topic. I did not feel like a loser playing only my N64 or my GAMECUBE or my Xbox, or my dreamcast. Or my game gear.

The whole "winning" thing is more of a "haha, OWNED" thing, because Sony fanboys (and the company Sony) were really full of themselves last generation. So its more of a "in yo face, mutha sucka!" type deal. Hell, I still remember those commercials where crash bandicoot went to Nintendo HQ and made fun of mario. That jerk!

So, in yo face, sony!

Yep, this gets to my the heart of my point. As egotistical as this is, I'm going to quote myself:

"In essence -- we want this to be a winner-and-losers, black-and-white contest, because it's appealing and enjoyable to think that way. It's like a sport. But we need to remember that reality comes in grey, and that there is no absolute winner or loser."

The feelings you're describing are exactly the sort I think spurs all of these flame wars. Not picking on you, by any means -- I feel these combative impulses myself. I think we ALL feel this way, sometimes. That's why I'm making this post: to help us all keep it in perspective.

Yeah I know. That's what I'm saying. Sony die-hards will now know what its like to be on the other side of the console sales. And they will still enjoy it, just like I enjoyed my N64 and GCN, because Sony will make sure, through whatever means, that they sell enough consoles and enough good games get released on it. Even if they're in last place in worldwide sales, they're still gonna have great exclusives you can't play on any other system.

If the owners of the PS3 or 360 or Wii enjoy their consoles, then THEY win. It doesn't matter what happens to a company's profits, as long as the customer profits, with FUN and games!

Every single portable, and console, in gaming history, should have at least one game that everyone likes. If not, you might be a little too narrow minded. That's what I think. Anyways, to be honest with you, I have always liked the Nintendo 64 games, and Gamecube games, more than Playstation, Playstation 2, and Xbox games. Then again, I only have a handful of games for each console. On my Gamecube, I have Wind Waker, Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, which are amongst my favorite games. I couldn't care less for anything else on the Gamecube. I grew up with Nintendo, so that's why I like their games better. I got into video games in the Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, and Playstation era, which explains why I like Mario, Sonic, and Crash so much; Well, I didn't like Sonic when he hit the Sega Saturn (damn Sega for cancelling Sonic Xtreme. I swear, that project-S better bring it back soon). When the geneartion before this generation arrived, I only bought games that brought nostalgia, but since Donkey Kong, Crash, and Sonic, sucked, all I was left with was Zelda, and Mario, which really pissed me off. I liked the first Jak game, and Ratchet and Clank games. They kind of filled the emptyness a little. Halo was also cool. It brought me into the world of first person shooters. I just felt the generation lacking a little bit. At the end, there is at least one game, in every single console, and portable, that I liked, or want to play. Long live the Wii!

You know what's interesting about that list in the original post? There are four consoles from the sixth generation on it, while there are only one or two consoles from the other generations. This previous generation was really special; not only that all the consoles were a success somehow (well probably the Dreamcast can't be titled a success, but the mistakes were done earlier at Sega, it's not the Dreamcast's fault that they are not producing hardware anymore), they were all very close. None of them had something really different from the others, and there were probably the most multiplatform titles of all times in that generation. This couldn't go on like that, and that was what Nintendo understood. They knew that it's time to offer something new to customers.

Oh, and @topic, I totally agree that it's not the case that only the console with the best sales rates is a good console, but the gaming library gets far bigger when the console sells the most, that's the important point I think. N64 had some of the best games of all times, but it only had a few good ones per genre.
