Forums - Gaming - Who here started playing online games this generation??

Online gaming is so common now, it has grown expodentially over the past few years. I can only attribute this to three key factors.

1. Wi-Fi - There is a reason I am not on Xbox live, because it has to be hardlined. Ease of access is something that is appealing, especially to lazy people like me lol. I play my wii and PS3 online and enjoy the experience, but I don't think I would if online gaming required a fair deal of setting up.

Wireless internet is popular now, but as this graph predicts, the use of Wi-Fi devices are increassing

2. Cheap broadband - When I first got broadband during the last gen it cost twice as much (even though I was still living with my parents) and was around 8 times slower if I remeber. So the attraction to get a modem and hook it up to my PS2 wasn't that great.

3. Social networking - Over the last year the top ten social networking sites have grown on average 47%. This indicates that the rate of people communiacting over the internet is constantly reaching new heights, a trend that is unlikely to reverse in the near future. This includes games. People are socialising over games such as WOW and second life, easing them into online gaming.

So although online gaming has been here for almost a decade it is now that most of us are actually playing online?? Then I guess Nintendo did the right choice at not supporting a complete online support for the GC and waited for the Wii to do it.

It's great that consoles this generation are sold with everything ready to play online making it very easy for most of us to do it. Of course I don't believe that online is the future of gaming, it sure improves replayablity as you can compete with a person instead of a game's AI, and also makes co-op games a lot more interesting, but I see online as a complement of that future, we have yet to see what direction will the future of gaming take but I guess Nintendo is a little ahead than the other two companies.

Oh wait.  Muds.  Hah I forgot Muds... that was probably my first online gaming exiperence.  Well that wasn't a board game... and yeah.

Not enough people had a good enough internet connection for that kind of thing.

i started playing online games with this generation, although i did play phantasy star online for the GC for about three months but i got tired of paying for it. but my first real online expirence started this generation.

I started with Diablo 2 and Ultima Online both played on dialup ...netzero highspeed ftw ^_^ Now i'm spoiled with broadband connection .

Hehe same here. UO on Dial up was hell :P My ping was 200ms. Now when I play it, it's at 15ms :D Great game though but takes too much life to invest in it. I also forgot I used to play Diablo 2 online as well - but wasn't overly phased - compared to UO.

Yea UO was great the PVP and skill level up kept me coming back again and again. Even on dial-up I managed to run 3 characters at the same time and macro skills Razor ftw :)

My first online was MotorStorm online. And I thought I will never be part of the online community.

my first online was Diablo 2

my first MMO that cost money was Dark age of Camelot

that was one great game the first 1,5 years

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I never had online for my PS2, and I never cared because there were so many games to play with great replay value.

When I got my 360 last year, it was then I started getting addicted to online play.

I started playing starcraft abotu 7 years ago online and never stopped
