Forums - Gaming - Reason why ps2 is still alive and viable platform...

All the PS2 owners that are playing the latest crappy ports of next gen games like Ironman and upcoming Alone in the Dark have to thank one company...nintendo.

Thanks to the wii, developers can dedicate resources to produce a game with gimped out graphics for a ps2 as they know that it can be ported to the wii and sell just as much if not more. Otherwise I believe we would have seen the end of PS2 in 2007 the latest.

On PS2 alone, I don't it would be profitable to make these games.

What do you think?

Hurray, yet another PS2 must die topic.

The PS2 is profitable, get over it. People still buy it and there's a market for the games. You may not like them, so what. The dollars just as green on the PS2 as it is on the Wii and everyone wants to make a living. Perhaps you should apply for a position of the guy who makes pointless whiny topics with no real substance. You already did great with this one.

A 115 million install base, cheapest home console development, 7 years of development knowledge and resources, etc...? Yes, these games would still be made. PS continued to sell well into the PS2 life despite not having "Wii" to help it along.

I wasn't saying PS2 must die...I own one, I could care less if its alive for another 10 years as I can play every game on it. However looking at ps2 game sales, this is what my opinion is and I was asking for other peoples opinions on this topic...not for people to start crying like babies without positing a sigle opinion or fact about the topic. Maybe you'd cry less if you could afford a next gen console no?

I have a ps3, Wii and gaming pc. Perhaps Nintendo can thank Sony for getting the games in the first place. 3rd party support on the wii is poor and these games may not have come to Wii if they couldn't be easily ported to the PS2 in the first place.

If money made by sales goes above development costs and other factors it's called profit. Without profit, no games on PS2. Simple explanation for simple people.

Yeah, but the quality of wii games would be alot better. The quantity might not be there, but there would be better quality.

There you go Gazz...see its not hard to bring an idea and an opinion to a topic. I can see why people would think this is the case...Wii getting games thanks to PS2.

However, I disagree with that logic is because Wii is getting much more exclusives than ps2 these days. Only few ports that have wide appeal are coming to PS2 as of 2008 (sega superstar tennis, Ironman, Alone in the dark...) and frankly I don't think the companies would bother with ps2 if they couldn't kill 2 birds with one stone...meaning if they couldn't use the same game engine for the wii and ps2. If Wii was more powerful only one game would get made and would be ported on all 3 major consoles...leaving the ps2 out of the loop.

Remember I am not talking about all ps2 games...as there still would be niche ps2 games like the Fatal Fury Collection coming out... Just the big games that are getting ported.

Absolutely, I think the success of the Wii and the relative failure of the HD consoles has contributed to extending the longevity of the PS2. The Wii is based the philosophy that graphics aren't as important as gameplay and alongside the PS2's extensive library, this validates its ongoing existence.

I wish this wasn't the case however. On the downside, it has resulted in third party developers being lazy with their Wii titles and not taking advantage of the Wii's strengths and unique capabilities.

I see this as a weird competitive symbiosis, both consoles are keeping each other going, when wii had no 3rd party games, ps2 (and gamecube to a extent) to the rescue, and now that the ps2 is dying for new games wii to the rescue, i also see the ps2's survival as the gamestop effect, people can go down the street and get great used games from 2001-04 for the ps2 for about $8 where gamestops weren't as common in the days of ps1 and snes.(even though there were some for ps1)
