Forums - Sales - After GTA, PS3 and 360 unchanged. Nintendo has this in the bag.

People thought Halo would spur huge 360 sales. It didn't. People thought GTA IV would spur huge 360 and PS3 sales. It didn't. In fact, during the time period, Wii saw some of its biggest sales. The race as of today I am calling for Nintendo, absent of something huge from Sony or Microsoft.

People that think that one or two games will change the fortunes of a console are just hoping for something ridiculous.  GTA 4 isn't going to really change the fortunes of either the PS3 or the 360.  Neither will Metal Gear Solid or Gears of War 2.

Maybe, at best, GTA 4 will sell an extra 400-600k of each system.  Wii Fit will have a bigger impact than that.

GTA had some effect, but not really much, especially because of the class act pulled by nintendo (holding back some hardware for the week just to twist the knife)

It's certainly not unchanged, but I too wish sony fanboys would move on, and stop denying that the PS3 still has a good chance of winning this console cycle. I don't think it does. I think it has a better chance of winning in Japan than winning worldwide if that is any indication of the chance I give the PS3 of beating the Wii.

I think the opposite. I think Sony has more chances of winning NA than Japan. Japan has always be a single console country.

FF13,GT5,MGS4,FFV13,WKC,NUNS,DBZBL,TOV(timed 360 exclusive),ES,LR,say otherwise.Japanese multiplatform games will also benefit more PS3 sales in Japan than 360 sales so PS3 is not entirely dead yet in Japan and definitely has a chance of surpassing the wii.

Consoles sell less in Japan than other territories which means that potential spikes would also be affected. So you could multiply that list by 3 and the PS3 still wouldn't be able to make up the near 4 million gap in Japan.

The fact that I can't tell what some of those games are probably speaks loud enough about their supposed impact in Japan.

I doubt that many of the knowledgeable members here were so naive as to seriously think that GTA IV was going to derail the Nintendo juggernaut (except possibly Crazzyman and his faith is unshakable). I'm not sure how many of us expected it to be Wiis biggest sales week/month ever and an all time industry record (I know Crazzyman, it was just because Nintendo withheld stock and then released it, the big meanies. Hey, it’s called business, get over it). There is less excuse for a distinguished magazine like Forbes, which is supposed to provide reliable sober information for people to invest their money, to feature an article suggesting quite seriously that GTA IV might kill the Wii. Written by a halfwit named Brian Caulfield, it also relied on information from Michael Pachter who flucuates between playing Capt. Obvious and just being wrong. It's alright for us to joke around here and poke fun at each other, but Forbes is supposed to be a source of reliable information. I don't think I would now trust them to tell me how to spend my pocket change.

@SuperLloyd-

Final Fantasy 13
Final Fantasy V 13
Gran Turismo 5
Metal Gear Solid 4
White Knight Chronicles
Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm
Dragon Ball Z-Burst Limit
Tales of Vesperia
Tekken 6
Eternal Sonnata
Last Remnant
Resident Evil 5

All of these and plenty more are Japanese oriented games that Japananse gamers are waiting for inorder make that transition towards the PS3 whether big or small an of impact these are the games that sell in Japan but there has to be enough of these games for example the main reason last year not to own a PS3 was the lack of quality and well known games, same for Japan they usually gravitate toward good games look at Monster Hunter 2 and what it did for the PSP. Inorder to better understand the situation;look at the current lineup of games for the PS3 and you will notice that most of all the games are good but targeted toward a western market[Uncharted,Ratchet,COD,Heavenly Sword, etc]with DMC being the one japanese oriented game that sells well in Japan and is good.Saying that people will only buy a wii because its a one console territory is not logical reason and is just blowing off the PS3 for no logical reason when consumers usually follow the games not the trends no matter how true this trend was last gen.

Which brings up my next point, the PS2 was successful in Japan because of the array of games it offered,a collection unmatched by Nintendo last gen or this gen. While Nintendo continues to dominate a market with no competition[software] as of yet,it remains to be seen whether or not this trend will continue and whether or not the PS3 has a chance overthrow the wii.

Meh...Wii may have this in the bag like you say...but if this holiday season doesn't deliver me some M rated games with great gameplay and good graphics, I'll have mine in a bag and sold on ebay.

The PS2 was successful in Japan long before any of the 'big' games came out. The PS2 sold 800k in it's first two days.

Crazzy, this is a better graph even if the GC sales are missing it shows nicely how SMG is selling as well as NSMB world wide.

http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Super+Mario+Galaxy+-+Wii®2=All&game2=Super+Mario+Sunshine+-+GC®3=All&game3=New+Super+Mario+Bros+-+DS&weeks=100

So as a matter of interest, why were you trying to show that Japan isn't as interested in Mario as before, besides Mario != Wii

(normally I wouldn't reply but Crazzy's graph is wonderful, it reminds me of SDF )

Viper - Crazzy has been around for a while, he just doesn't post as much as Leo-j and makes even less sense.

How many titles on the Wii has Mario in it somewhere?  Either as a character or as a title to a game?  Quite a few actually, so maybe Mario does = Wii.  ;)

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

I refuse to accept that the PS3/360 would have any significant effect on the Wii in the same way i'd refuse to accept that the Wii would have any significant affect on the 360/PS3.

" Hmm GTA IV or Wii-Fit , Tough choice...." Can't imagine to many people with that dilema.

I know I'd have no problem choosing between those two software titles.  (I refuse to call Wii Fit a "game").

They target different audiences and I am just amused and honestly, a bit shocked to see so much buzz and glee from those who claim to be gamers here having a desire to have that software title.

I'd also like to see a follow up from people 6 months after it's launch to see who is still using it regularly.   I can promise that you'd see far more people playing GTA4 after 6 months then you would Wii Fit.
